I have had a couple of cheap gold-tone watches that I tried to chip away the (assumed) outer layer to see what the metal was like underneath. It has been a while since I did this, but it seems like they were purely the same metal throughout. So, it seemed like there was no outer layer.

Was it brass?

What type of goldtone metal does Timex use? I think one of the watches I tried was a Timex.

Thanks for any information. (I'm also interested in silver/steel-toned watches.)

Was it brass? Probably a very cheap brass alloy.

"Gold tone" is any finish that has no measurable gold content, but appears gold. It can be gold plated.

No, I doubt that they were gold plated if they were that cheap.

I know there are lots of cheap gold-toned jewelry pieces. You can buy them gas station counters. They practically give them away. I just wondered if someone knew what they were made of. How they are made.

In China from the cheapest possible available parts and metals. The Gilding (gold plating) can be just a few mikrons thick.
