I always assumed it had something to do with the greek word for "belief" (see orthodox). We use it a lot in philosophy (shoutout unemployable major) to describe a level of knowing something which doesn't rise to the cosmic level of "episteme". What that has to do with watches, I have no idea.

“Doxa” is the opinion of the day. A current societal belief which is subject to change.
“Logos” is the opposite; Logos is a long standing more traditional view of a subject.
