I've read a ton of threads on here, but it is still not clear to me what the difference is between these watches.

From what I have gleaned, the FO was a limited edition of 80 pieces, but how is it cosmetically or functionally different from the AO???

I'm guessing the FO is no longer available? Is the AO the next closest thing you can get (or is it the same?)

There is none: FO = german = Flieger Original = AO = english = Airman Original.
The first run of the AO/FO was a limited edition with some special specs.

AO LE had a golden balance cock (some say bridge) and an extra solid caseback, + an additional strap, caseback changing tool, project documentation.
The serial AO/FO is available, if you order now you will probably get it in December 2009 or even later. I am not in the loop actually.
