Hi all! I've been shopping for a g shock for a while, I want a nice digital compared to all my other watches. A while ago, I bought a Rangeman, but it was way too large for me. I haven't found one to trick my trigger since. Until today, I came across this photo of a very slim looking square. Most of the squares I've seen looked too big.

Here is the photo, sorry for the facebook link, you can make the photo larger by clicking in the top-right. https://www.facebook.com/amorphis/p...20414195275/10156152006615276/?type=3&theater

Thanks for any help. It's slim, small, black, and INDESTRUCTIBLE. (if there's a solar atomic version, even better, but I mostly care about this SIZE. And negative black screen is great as well)

GW-5000B DLC

GW-5000 DLC

https://geeklounge.wordpress.com/tag/gw-5000-1jf/

From Wornandwound

"For the exact opposite of value, but for true excessive watch nerd pleasure, I’ll introduce the Japan-only GW-5000, which is a modern tribute to the very first G-Shock model, the DW5000, which came to market in 1983.

The $325 GW-5000 looks like any $40 “square” G you can buy at Wal-Mart, and that’s its beauty. Only the wearer knows it has a metal case, a DLC’d screwdown caseback, solar and atomic features and a softer resin case and band.

Is it overpriced? Of course. Is it awesome in its ridiculousness? Of course.

Non-watch people will think you are an idiot for paying over $300 for a plain G-Shock that you have to order from Japan. But that’s why they are non-watch people."

Thank you two. That black on black one is absolutely gorgeous. I thought these squares were the most affordable of all g shocks, boy I guess I'm wrong, looking on amazon.
I found these two at Kohl's (and I have a 40 dollar gift card for there, but won't go for these two if I find an affordable black on black).

Casio Watch - Men's G-Shock Tough Solar Digital Black Resin Chronograph

I really like the solar atomic features of the second, but not the red ring. Are these similar or close to the one being worn in the picture?

Thanks a lot yankeexpress, I appreciate your input.
I'm not a fan of the GW-056, and so far that 5600BB is my favorite. It's $140 on Amazon, which was more than I was planning on spending, but it is better than the quote you mentioned of it being $300.

Kohl's DW-5600E is pricey at over $50, they were $28 at Target over this weekend holiday sale but apparently are sold out online.
$90 for the GW-M5610 isn't too bad though, tough, though if you want a negative display you might want to consider the GW-M5610BC which has a wonderful bracelet (they can be found online for about $165 shipped from japan).

The GW-5000 are the ones around $300, they are steel case and premium quality, not like the resin case such as the $50-$150 models.

DW-5600E, the basic G available at Walmart, Target, etc. sometimes at ridiculously low sale prices. I put it on an eBay bracelet.

The normal, original square probably was the most affordable at the time, and its direct descendant -- the DW-5600E -- still IS one of the most affordable.

Today there are so many different variations, with so many different features, that there are probably MORE squares (and square variants with "56" in the model number) than any other type of G-Shock!

Saying that squares are the most affordable these days is kind of like saying that black cars are the most affordable -- both statements were true at one time (when Model T's only came in black) but they're definitely incorrect today! :)

Are these similar or close to the one being worn in the picture?
'Similar" and "close to" are hard to quantify. Functionally, squares can be divided into "basic battery powered models," "solar-powered models," and "solar/atomic models." All three of those also come (or came) in "basic" or "tide graph" (aka Glide) versions. There are also battery-powered models with Bluetooth. More features generally means a higher cost.

Aesthetically, most of those versions come with a choice of positive or negative displays, and people are apparently willing to pay more for a negative display that is harder to read.

Some of those versions also come with high-end features like bracelets instead of resin straps, or the collectible GW-5000 with steel screwback case and DLC coating, but the modules inside can also be found in more affordable versions.

Speaking of Model T's, the GW-5600J has been out of production for a few years and was succeeded by the 5- and 6-band GW-5600 and -5610 versions. Today, the GW-5600J is relatively easy to find in used condition, but is almost impossible to find "new in box" and we routinely mock the occasional Amazon or eBay seller who finds one on a dusty shelf and then asks for ridiculous amounts of money for it. :-d

The GW-5000-1jf have gone down in price, I picked one up from Chino in Japan, last week. Shipped via express mail to me and was going for $266 with shipping and handling. Been wearing it since and I absolutely love it. My one and only G Shock and I don't think I'll need to own anything else.

Thank you all so much! When I get home today I will do some price checking and shop around. You guys have really helped me out with many beautiful black ones! Very exciting.

Mike K: sorry to not be clear, by similar, I meant in size. Because based on the two watches I put up from kohls one appeared to be a different shape than the other, even though both were squares.

Yup, good eye. The GW-M5610 is a little smaller than the DW-5600E. If you don't need the atomic synchronization, the G-5600E is the solar only version, with the other features of the GW-M5610 (5 alarms, world times, auto el backlight).
Here are the three standard models together:

Very interesting thread, I've been having a hard time making sense of all the different g shock squares available. Can anyone tell me what is the most basic and inexpensive square with a negative display?
