In India, the import duty on watches was 28.852% at the beginning of this year. In February, it was revised to 41.492%.
Now, since July 1, 2017, websites like Amazon and eBay are displaying the estimated duty to be about 82% on watches.
So now, we have to pay almost double the amount of the original price of the watch to purchase from an international seller.

I asked, there was no reply to my email. A new tax system called GST was introduced on July 1st here in India. I believe the steep duty rise is because of that tax system.
I know that the duty was 41.492 before July, and Amazon and Indian eBay importer sellers used to charge the same amount, 42% approx. But now, they have increased their prices a lot.

In the UAE its 5% on anything (not just watches) with a declared value of more than... I forgot the exact number, it was either 200 or 300 USD.
That is great!

In Australia, if the watch plus shipping is greater that AU$1,000, then 10% Goods and Services Tax (GST) is payable on both the watch and shipping,
I think I know about this rule. I have a family member living in Australia. My next watch would be ordered to Australia :D

In Australia, if the watch plus shipping is greater that AU$1,000, then 10% Goods and Services Tax (GST) is payable on both the watch and shipping, plus there is an administrative charge of under $100 if I recall correctly. If valued under $1,000, then no charges are applied. Also, if the item is marked as a gift, no charges are applicable.

Edit: provided the legislation passes parliament, from 1 Jul 18 the $1,000 tax free threshold will be reduced to $0, although I believe there may still be a tax free threshold if you bring the goods in personally. Others may know better than me.

Don't confuse import duty and taxes like VAT or GST.

In the EU, we pay 0.50€ for importing a watch, but about 20% VAT. However, bear in mind that we pay the VAT for ALL goods we buy, but we simply don't notice when we buy locally, since it's already included in the sales price. The only price we actually pay additionally when we compare a watch bought locally or imported from outside EU, is the import duty, which is negligible.

In the UK, there is no import duty for a single watch. We do get hit for VAT though at 20% which is also charged on the cost of shipping + shipping (if not free) + shipper 'handling charges', usually around ÂŁ10-15. If you're very lucky, a watch may get through without being charged VAT but this depends how honest the seller is with their customs declaration. It's sometimes cheaper to just pay the UK price with VAT already included (if the watch is available here), otherwise we gotta suck it up...

For India, just replace the word VAT with Duty :D
We "get hit" with duty. That's what we call. If somebody is lucky or the shipment is not coming via big logistics companies like DHL, FedEx, etc., it may be delivered without any duty.

0% import duty and sales tax in Hong Kong for watches, or anything else really.

The couple of exceptions being alcohol and tobacco as expected. With spirits (whisky and the like), the duty is 100% (!!!) the value of the good. Crazy stuff. Depending on the value of the bottle, it could actually be cheaper to fly to another country, buy the bottle and carry it back as part of the 1L alcohol allowance.

0% in Hong Kong, no surprise because that's where most of the watches are exported from. Still, great for you people if you want to order Swiss watches or from USA and other countries.

No, It used to be 28.852% before this year's budget. I paid this much duty for my Orient Mako II that I received in January this year.
Since February, it became 41.492%. In may, I was looking for Seiko SKX007 on various websites. Amazon.com page showed the estimated duty to be around 42%. I ordered from eBay, DHL charged me around 42% as duty + some handling charges.
Now, since the arrival of GST on July 1st, Amazon is showing the duty to be around 82%. It's no coincidence. I believe something has changed, surely.

Im looking to buy a watch from Hong kong and ship to Pennsylvania. Its a preowned watch SP is less than $800 whereas the MSRP is over $800. Will there be any duty on this purchase? Will they look up the MSRP over internet to levy import duty or they will ride with the declared value on the shipment?

Hope this is the right place to ask this. What is the process if you are simply doing an exchange, non monetary 1-1 swap from the US to the UK and vice versa.

You'll still have to pay customs on it coming into the US as an import if the package gets pulled aside. I've brought in probably a dozen watches from overseas and been hit with customs twice. Once from Japan Post and once from FedEx.

It's a variable customs cost in the US though, and there are legal and honest strategies you can use to minimize your cost.
