Cardi was a design company. name is apparently abbreviated from 'car design', strangely enough. In the 90s designed watches , mainly dials, sometimes cases for some watchmakers, ZiM and Vostok in particular. Later switched over to Chinese movements, was purchased by Orion. Last heard of in 2009, now is probably defunct as is Orion.

Great! Thanks. That's probably the reason for the car theme then. With racetime and GP on the dial. :-d

In the earliest 90's there were Cardi branded watches with Vostok, Raketa, ZiM, Zaria movements, as well as some Chinese from the late 90's on. The cases were made by Vympel in Belarus, mostly of brass or cheap alloys, initially these were allegedly better than Vostok, with some kind of bling factor, but their Titanium Nitride coating were actually getting worse and worse. Vympel had many cases left and went on putting Chinese movements and sells them now for near to nothing, since they stopped watch production some years ago for furniture fittings manufacturing. I actually called them one year ago, the managing lady wanted to check what was left in old cardboard boxes.

The website of Vympel went dead last year :( https://web.archive.org/web/20130721110016/http://vpz.by/

As to the name Cardi:
Are we absolutely certain that the brand Cardi has to do with Company Background.
Rekord was founded in 1992 to produce watches based on Vostoks with customized dials as state and corporative gifts. In 1996, it launched a successful watch line named GARO.
After its bankruptcy in 1999, it was taken over by InterEX, makers of Orion. The shareholders just bought some brand names (Rekord, then Soyuz) for branding China made watches.
Orion uses Chinese movements except for some NOS Poljot manual winding Chronograph movements, Slava, and Zaria manual winding movements
