Homage is like fromage, for me, some have excellent taste, some have awful taste, for others it could be the reverse. Most watches are a copies of other watches, as long as the name isn’t copied I don’t see a problem.

Of course a Rolex is better than a San Martin. But is it 50 times better?
For a luxury good, you don't penny-pinch on the value proposition.
The whole point is for people to see that you spent 50 times more on product X, because you could.

The problem with that statement is that most people think a Rolex is a $2000 watch.
Most people who aren't into watches have no idea what they cost.
Well, I guess it depends on who you're trying to impress.
Impressing someone that would be impressed by a Seiko 5 is certainly easier for your wallet.

I would not buy a 1 for 1 copy of a luxury brand to portray it as the real deal, that's not me. I have however purchased a few watches from San Martin and Pagani that have a similar style of models I like. Nothing wrong with buying generic Lucky Charms if you can't afford name brand Lucky Charms. Not sure why SOME individuals who owns a luxury brand gets upset when someone has a watch that's similar in looks and only paid a few hundred for it.

Anyways new to the site and WOW a wealth of information!

I'm not trying to impress anyone. My game is to push people away. And i don't think a wristwatch makes any difference in any case.
Body odor can do that.

Buy, wear, enjoy whatever tickles your stuff. Order pina colodas and sit at Trader Vic’s while casually cross-threading the crown. Share at will. Take no ****.

If it’s legal and you like it, then do it (please).

However: The watches mentioned here and in other, countless threads pay no homage. If they are correctly branded, they are design-copied watches; otherwise, they are fakes.

Conjecture: If enthusiasts would stop intentionally misrepresenting the product (the effing “homage” word) I’m sure that only a few gate-keeping wannabe’s would care enough to keep these incessant, moronic threads going. Perhaps they would lose interest.

I think that any company that copies Lucky Charms should be boycotted. The years of research and thousands of hours spent by engineers with masters degrees that it took to create Lucky Charms is immeasurable. I am livid!! I can't type anymore.

I prefer this term myself.

I’ve finally settled the debate (for myself).

There are design copies that blatantly take the majority of its design cues from a watch made by different manufacturer. To remain in my design copy designation, the watch must be legal to sell.

There is an homage which is created by the manufacture. It is a design copy of one of their models that was made in the past. Example: Tudor Ranger.

Then there is a design copy that also includes the branding of another brand, made for the purpose of fooling the consumer or general public. This is a counterfeit and illegal.

Some watch brands take various design cues from other brands but not enough to be considered a copy of the original design. Everyone’s tolerance is different when it comes to how much is too much. “What we’ve got here is a failure to innovate.”

Soooooo.........What's the verdict?
  • there will always be homages/copies, from the east & the west.
  • there will always be a minority of watch nerds complaining about them.

Draw the line wherever you want. Just don't buy/sell illegal fakes.

My take? Go outside, meet real people. Quickly you will realise how ridiculous it is to complain about homages/copies.
