OMEGA Speedmaster 3510.50 Chronograph reduced.

I have never owned a chronograph. I have a budget maxing out at $2500. My collection consists of more off the beaten path pieces, so the Hanhart is up my alley, but because of that, I also could use a classic piece like the Omega.

I can’t afford anything more than a well used version of the Omega vs. a new Hanhart. That means I probably shouldn’t trust the Omega in water. I always wanted an Omega in the collection, and feel a classic piece like this would get a lot of wear. The size is a little more wrist friendly for my 7” wrist. The Hanhart is just a great design though with a lot of history and character. I also like the cleanness of the Handhart vs the busy tachometer type of bezel, which I’ll never use.

Thanks for listening. What would you pick and why?

Hanhart for me. It's a cool looking watch and unlikely to encounter @GTGs or in the wild.

And that red stripe at 12 o'clock reminds me of this

As someone who has owned the Speedy reduced (and loved it to death), get the Hanhart.

The reduced is actually a major PITA for multiple reasons.

For one thing, the second you sit it next to a buddy's Speedy Pro, the ~1mm case difference and wider band on the Pro will make you want one instead of the reduced. Trust me on that.

You will be pining for a Pro so just wait until you're ready to add one to your collection in the future. Second, the reduced in my experience is a LOT more difficult to source parts for vs the much more popular and circulated Pro models, and the parts are surprisingly expensive. I also am not a fan of the sapphire bubble crystal. While beautiful, It's super expensive, a ding/scratch magnet and can't be easily buffed like the Hesalite. I like smaller watches, but the 18mm lug width really makes it look small in today's metric. I think you should get the Hanhart and add a Speedy Pro to your collection in good time when you are ready.

Hanhart. I'm a years-long fan of that watch. I intend to get that one, or similar, after the first of the year.

With the Speedy, you're paying for the pedigree (less for that movement, as I understand it). I've tried to like the Speedy, but it simply does nothing for me. I bought a Pro and flipped it days later.

The only downside to a Hanhart might be its resale value if purchased new. I may be wrong about that, but it is a less-well-known brand, so...

Happy hunting!

Hanhart for me.

Had a Speedy and it really didn’t do it for me (Hides behind settee and holds ears) despite it being everyone’s favourite.

The Hanhart is a far better looking watch in my eyes. I must admit that I am not a big chronograph fan and haven't bought one in a decade but that Hanhart is extremely attractive to me. I would love to have it someday.
It is the clean dial and bezel that separates it from alot of other chronos for me. Lovely watch.

You'd be fool to buy either of these watches new. Hanhart used drops its price like a bomb. I like the Hanhart designs (If you dig WWII military aesthetics), but the one you linked is a dud. It uses generic chrono movement and has symmetrical pushers (real Hanhart has asymmetrical pushers, so this one a cheapo) like any Selita or ETA off the shelf movement, so that is a strike one against it. Second as I already mentioned Hanhart does not hold value. Another strike against Hanhart , it only has two registers and both are 100% useless. Who needs 30 and 60 second timers in 2021?
At least Omega has an hours subdial and you can use it to track a second timezone.

My understanding is that the Reduced movement is nowhere near as good as the Pro. I know nothing about the Hanhart so I can't really say which is the better but I had a Reduced and it has serious problems (bought used). My watch guy told me to send it back and stay clear. He's really good and I believe him.

Omega is more wearable.
The vintage vibe of the Hanhart limits its versatility. For example, it would look out of place on a nato or bracelet (even though some with no eye for coordination could try those combos and say "it's fine", it's really not).

I would go for the Hanhart. I agree with what others have said about the likelihood of you wanting the Speedy Pro at some point (as a very happy owner of a Speedy Pro for over 20 years). I disagree with the comment about “generic” movements being a bad thing because movements made by Sellita or another quality movement makers are tried and true and offer lower maintenance costs due to availability of parts (best to verify the exact movement in the Hanhart to ensure this holds true) coupled with the likelihood that most capable watchmakers can perform the service.

I don’t buy based on resale value. Since most watches lose value immediately after purchasing, I buy with the intention of keeping the watch long term.

Good luck making your decision!
