Who to believe about a clasp’s authenticity?

Hello community,

I’m a first time poster here, and as a newish collector I was hoping my first post would be to share my thanks to you and to share my watch collection and journey (I suppose that will have to wait at a later time). But alas, a cast has been doubt on one my recent purchases and seeking advice here.

I purchased a Rolex 16220 from Watchbox via eBay this past August. A gorgeous watch that I’ve been eyeing for quite sometime. I got it at a very good price, and have purchased from Watchbox before (my first was a 116200 Roulette Date, but from Watchbox’s website directly). The jubilee bracelet was loose but overall the piece was great.

I finally got around to getting the bracelet serviced and after seeing Rolliworks’ reviews here, decided to go with them. After their initial assessement, they told me that they do not believe that the clasp on my 16220 was made by Rolex. (Um, what??) The bracelet isn’t in question, just the clasp.

I reached out to eBay’s authenticity folks, and their representative stated that they stand by their guarantee. I asked Rolliworks to double check the clasp, and they are standing by their word as well. I’m now awaiting word from Watchbox.

For my part, I told Rolliworks to continue with the job because I already miss the watch and just want it back freshly tightened

We’re now at a he said/she said conundrum. While both are reputable sources, I of course as the end user have to live with the doubt.

I’ll keep ya’ll posted here on what I hear from Watchbox . Thanks and hope to share the rest of my collection journey later.

I would tend to believe Rolliworks. Rolex bracelets are their speciality. I don’t expect you’ll receive a consensus on originality from the three parties (Rolliworks, eBay, and Watchbox), so I’d ask Rolliworks for a quote to replace the clasp with a Rolex clasp and take that number back to Watchbox and ask for an adjustment refund. If all of this fails then I would just move on and enjoy the beautiful watch and, if a non-original clasp bothers you, then keep an eye on eBay for an original.

I bet the clasp looks like this, as you can see, very tinny with rudimentary design that anyone can easily replicate, I am not surprised that Watchbox people may have missed it...ebay, that is another story, I don't think they are too concerned with straps or clasps which may often be aftermarket on the watches they authenticate...

Quick update: Just heard back from Watchbox and they are also standing by their authenticity guarantee. They did say that once I have the bracelet back to get it re-inspected by certified RSC to reverify its authenticity, if I wanted. If it turns out the RSC believes its not authentic, WB can provide a solution at that time. WB was very accommodating and professional - as a matter of fact all parties were. Anyway, this could take awhile.

I’m inclined to go with Rolliworks here. They deal with vintage Rolex bracelets and clasps multiple times/day. WatchBox has experience, for sure, but not at that level. As for EBay authentication, who knows what sorts of monkeys get assigned to that task.

You got it from The WatchBox? they don’t sell Rolex. Their sister AD sells Rolex via the Rolex CPO

I just took a shot of my 16233 bracelet (serviced twice by Rolex and the bracelet tightened by Rolliworks), and on mine, the 'Registered' and Swiss Made are left-aligned like this:

Registered
Swiss Made

There's also more space between 'STEELINOX' and the logo. There's a number after the 'H' (mine says 'H 18') and 'R9' is engraved above 'Steelinox'. There's also no crown logo to the right of the 62510 (which is 62523 on mine).

Here's a picture of mine (sorry, I don't have a great macro-lens, this was taken with an iPhone zoomed in).

Interesting. I purchased a Sub from a reputable grey seller. When I went to sell it the buyer questioned the authenticity of the bracelet and clasp. They could not prove anything but it caused quite a bit of disruption. It turns out these bracelets and clasps can be faked so well almost no one can tell the difference. We had it inspected by several watchmakers and an AD and no one could confirm or deny that it was real. My seller need up taking the watch back. I suspect there’s a lot of fake bracelets out there in the wild given the high quality of the fakes. I think people swap the bracelets with fake ones and then resell the legit ones.

Here's another one for reference. Needs to be cleaned...

I found a similar clasp to yours for sale online. I think yours might be a service clasp as well.

It has an S on the clasp, which apparently is for Service.

“The bracelets will usually coincide with the watch year of manufacture. If there is “S” on the clasp that means clasp was changed in last service by Rolex AD.”
