Why does Cartier use mineral crystal instead of sapphire for the Tank Louis?

Been mulling over a Santos or a Tank Louis... and I noticed that they're advertising mineral crystal for the WGTA0011 reference Tank Louis. Has this historically been the case? I understand it's a dress watch and not a sports watch that'll take a beating... but what's the rationale?

Sorry to revive this old thread but no sense creating another for the same question.

Considering a Tank Louis for my wife only to learn that these feature a mineral crystal. I was surprised to learn this, at this price point, and was wondering if there’s a compelling reason for this apparent cut-rateness?
Not a definitive answer but a potential rabbit hole you can go down. Starting at post #2

I believe if you look at it from an angle, the crystal is somewhat domed and not totally flat. At least it is on my CPCP Tank Louis Cartier XL from 2008. At least back then they could not do that with a sapphire crystal. I've had mine for 15 years and it's still quite durable and shows not scratches or chips. I had it serviced earlier this year and it still didn't need a new crystal after all those years of use.
