Been mulling over a Santos or a Tank Louis... and I noticed that they're advertising mineral crystal for the WGTA0011 reference Tank Louis. Has this historically been the case? I understand it's a dress watch and not a sports watch that'll take a beating... but what's the rationale?

I believe if you look at it from an angle, the crystal is somewhat domed and not totally flat. At least it is on my CPCP Tank Louis Cartier XL from 2008. At least back then they could not do that with a sapphire crystal. I've had mine for 15 years and it's still quite durable and shows not scratches or chips. I had it serviced earlier this year and it still didn't need a new crystal after all those years of use.
Mineral crystal is, at times, more expensive and better shock/break resistant than a sapphire crystal. Cartier being more wedded to it's origins and tradition, use mineral glass for it's prestigious models that represent it's lineage.
