I went through 60+ pages of NASA picture archive in order to post things in the thread i created. It's not the end of archive but trend after 2014 become very obvious.

It as close as it can get. Real pictures from space station from each and every mission including pre flight, flight and landing. You can literally see in pre flight their personal watches, geared up issued plus personal etc.
NASA became very lax with watches past mid 80s. For anything but space walks (Omega mechanical only). People bring whatever they fell fit which survived training. And modern watches do survive a lot. G-Shocks, non G Casio, Timex...
I have not seen any statement from NASA and in many cases you can trace archival documents. You would be surprised how many army, navy, NASA etc. archived documents are there in free access.
Not like i am saying it's not true, just from moment you can trace these pictures from late 80s early 90s Shuttle missions you don't see many DW5600 . You see plenty of other watches which kind of hints if that was the only one approved at the time... this makes me suspicious.
There are plenty of myths perpetuating and plenty of stories told in different light. Like Bulova Moonwatch. It is fascinating story and good watch but under glory it was actually on the moon there is something i would not be proud to buy watch for. Sure, DW5600 story is different in terms of there is no corruption involved. It's honest story.
Thing is even if DW5600 was approved at some point it quickly lost any importance and anything goes approach prevailed. There are plenty of watches which can claim space heritage. Including 8 lap Ironman. Which is both Space and President watch on a budget (i have both variants) . Even humble GW500 is a space watch. You can literally wear space watches on a budget for two weeks without paying Omega money. And don't get my wrong, i think Omega X33 is great watch i will be happy to own one. May be incoming GAS100 (for parts/repairs) should be last watch i buy for now and start saving for Omega.
My point. DW 5600 was in space at some time. More than once. Sure, but it far cry from Omega which is issued official watch which was on each mission on each wrist. DW 5600 crown lost among so many other digital watches Casio included. If you look close there are more 5900s than 5600s.
