Will the Pelagos 39 replace the BB58 as Tudors most desired watch?

The BB58 has been the darling of Tudor watch lovers for several years now. In that time the Pelagos has had respect but never generated the massive following that The Black Bay line has ( especially the 58). Pretty simple premise- will the Pelagos go past the BB58 as Tudors most sought after watch and will it be ultimately the most popular Tudor?

I don't think so. The main similarities are their size and that's about it. One is a no-fuss, all matte and brushed tool watch, while the other is a shiny, vintage inspired, slightly dressy dive watch. Many people don't like titanium, and then there are people like myself that like a little bling on a watch. To be honest I'm underwhelmed by both of them, but I think the 58 is a more appealing watch overall.

I think the 39 Pelagos is a better looking/more interesting watch than the BB58. But, I think more people prefer stainless to titanium. I prefer stainless myself, but the aesthetics of the new Pelagos look so good to my eye, that I'd choose it over the BB58, regardless that it's titanium. It will be interesting to see how well it sells over time.

Ironically, I think the BB58 eclipses the 39mm Pelagos as a true diver, in the style of the Submariner. Both have 200m resistance, similar dimensions, but the sun ray dial on the Pelagos - though subtle - moves it into the “casual wear” category for me. It comes across more as a “dress diver.” I never though of the BB 58 as a tool watch, but compared to the new Pelagos, it seems so. Maybe the marketing geniuses at Tudor sense there is a robust niche for “dress divers.” They definitely seem to have struck a chord, at least initially. We’ll see.

LMAO. A true diver is not shiney, period. Sure people will flame me and argue for their favorite new toy, because that's what we do, justify our purchases with our biases but if you want thr ultimate diver, which is the ultimate tool watch, it will not have a high polish.

I guess if you ignore the brushed case/bracelet, the dial, the non gilt hour markers, the non gilt hands, the lume, the adjustable bracelet, the non riveted bracelet, the overhangs of the bezel, etc., they are the same watch… in that case all 39mm dive watches are the same, as details don’t seem to matter anymore.

True that BB58 is the darling of the forum but I don’t think it’s entirely true that the BB58 is Tudor’s most sought after watch. It can be had pretty easily within a few months of waiting. In fact, I think the BBGMT is the one that is in demand.

As for your question, nah, doubt that the Pelagos 39 will surpass the BB58 in desirability just for the fact that they both serve different segments of the watch world. One is steel and with gilt hands, the other is a modern take on an old watch in no less, Titanium.

In my opinion, they should have given a different name to the BB58 as it can be a standalone range, as is the Pelagos 39. Both are a fail with product planners who wanted to borrow the name of a more famous watch in their range but are actually unique design language on their own to be a separate line of watches. To this end, they could call the BB58 the heritage line and the Pelagos 39 a Tudor Submariner Ti., leaving the door open for a steel version.

I started this thread because I think they are both petty damn cool watches. I do own a 42mm Pelagos so I'm just declaring that. Personally if I didn't already have a Pelagos, I'd probably take the P39 over the BB58 but it wouldn't be an easy choice for me. However, I ultimately think that the BB58 will end up being the most popular with buyers in general.

I said no since they're two different watches in appearance and appeal to different non-collecting audiences.

I like the new Pelagos better than the 42mm Pelagos (better size in both case diameter and thickness) and better bracelet and clasp than both the 42mm Pelagos and the BB58.

The sunburst on the new one isn't extreme at all and overall I think it's better looking now and will age better than the other two as well.

I’m kind of partisan, since I like only watches between 34mm and 39mm, and the new Pelagos finally got my size. But besides the size factor, I think the new model just looks more balanced, professional and old school (something that every Tudor enthusiasts like me should appreciate) compared to the BB58. With that said, I find both watches to be beautiful and mechanically amazing, especially if we consider the relatively low price tag, but the Pelagos still win the game for me.

Both are great watches and have very different tones, so I don't necessarily see them competing. I'd own both if I could for their different reasons.

Even with the Pelagos having the T-Fit, if a colleague was looking for a vintage slightly more dressy watch, I'd still recommend a BB58 - especially since you can buy an on-the-fly extension link now.

Kinda seriously, I really like both the BB58 and Pelagos 39 (and I have a Pelagos 42 which I adore). I don't want either of them to be better than the other. They're both really good.

Can't we all just get along ?

A little bummed that it appears the clasp on the P39 is rather large in line with the 6 digit subs. I’ll reserve judgement until I can see one in person. As for the BB58 despite the lack of on the fly adjustment I found the clasp to be very svelte and in balance with the theme of the watch. One of those cases where we’re splitting hairs and your probably can’t go wrong
