Would anyone recommend the Sea Gull M172s?

Looking to purchase my first Chinese watch and have fell in love with the look and design of the Sea Gull M172s.

Before I go and purchase a M172s, I just want to make sure I am making a wise decision. From what I can tell on these forums, the Sea Gull brand in general is one of the better Chinese watchmakers.

Either way...The Sea Gull M172s Specs:

  • 316L Stainless Steel, 40mm
  • Movement:Sea-Gull Automatic Movement, ST-25,38J
  • Band:Genuine Leather
  • Crystal:Sapphire Crystal (Front and Back)
  • Water Resistance:50m
  • Functions:Flyback power reserve Indicator, Flyback date, Exposed balance wheel at 6 o'clock
For around $250 would many consider this a decent purchase for the price? Any other recommendations? (Would want it to include open-heart and power-reserve)

Also if anyone knows of another option to purchase this watch other than these two just let me know.

Basically just looking for a little assurance that I am making a good decision before purchasing anything ;-)

Thank you!

I think it's a good decision.

Timex contracted that model to be produced under its brand as well, and it is generally accepted that Sea-Gull reserves it's best movements for it's own products.

Plus: it's beautiful! :-!

Actually, I can't think of a better open-heart with power reserve.

As for the Taobao option, although I'm a great fan of Taobao, I think you'll find that after shipping the Taobao price and Kevin's price at US Sea-Gull will turn out to be virtually identical--but if there ever was a problem with the watch (rare), I'm very sure warranty stuff would be waaaaay easier with Kevin.

Hi y4nk335,

I bought one in the begining of this year, its my third seagull, well the fourth, i offer a skeleton to my girlfriend, it looks better on her...

Till now i`m very happy, the price/quality is very good, mine does +/-9 secs a day, so it very reliable.

The only problem i had whit seagull is whit that skeleton i offer. It is cracked in the glass, a very small crack in sapphire glass, but then, i already know my girlfriend, so its not difficult to understand how the hell she could crack a sapphire glass, something i never do since i have watches...

Hope i help you in your choice.

Regards,

João Laranjeiro

I have a similar model, and I'm happy with it except for a couple of issues. It has a lot of resistance when winding manually. If you are going to wear it every day or two, it wouldn't matter. There is also a fiber riding around on the escape wheel in mine. It does keep excellent time and the design is great.

I bought one and just put it on my wrist earlier today. Love It! My First SEA-GULL, I think my first Chinese watch. Might need to find a bracelet for it, but other than that... it's pretty amazing for the price. My manual winding is almost too smooth I though it was not working, but the reserve dial was moving up. Did is say the word Beautiful yet?

I have the brother/sister watch - the M171s

Very happy - though mine came with a cosmetic defect on the winding rotor. It doesn't affect the watch's operation or timekeeping.

And sapphire glass still going strong, water resistance has survived numerous showers - I expect my watches to be able to withstand normal use ;)

I've even gotten random compliments from strangers on my watch - :-d a look of surprise to find that this is an "expensive" Chinese watch (more expensive than the quartz beaters you find in Walmart at least).
