Very cool gift!
I did some " research".
Before 1950, the letter / number code wasn't used. It was a symbol representing the year. Not on the caseback..inside on the movement. How handy.
I see a manufactured small gap that a tool fits in to pop the case back off. I'll do that soon. By googling "vintage Bulova Date codes", you will find some info.

IWC Portugieser IW371620. Love how the elegance of the Portugieser line up but always seemed too dressy for me. This model with the blue numerals/subdials/hands and paired with the blue rubber has a more casual vibe while remaining elegant and true to the Portugieser vibe.
