Re: Member's Rolex datebase

lol cyclopectomy :)

How did you do it? Done yourself? Looks good!
The modification is quite simple and inexpensive:
  • Obtain a replacement (service) Rolex crystal.
  • Immerse it in acetone for a couple of days.
  • Flip the "bubble" off with your thumbnail.
  • Have a competent watchmaker swap the crystals and pressure test the watch.
  • Retain the original crystal should you ever wish to do a factory restoration.
The total cost was less than $180. Now I have full view of the gorgeous black dial/white markers - plus the date is now legible at a glance:

Re: Member's Rolex datebase

Hi, there was a thread relating to a Saddam Hussein gifted watch, i posted this pic there. This watch was gifted to its original owner (not me) in 1987 at a function in London by King Fahd, then the Saudi ruler-now deceased. The original owner then proceeded to put it in a drawer and not wear it for the next 22 years. Whilst it keeps perfect time, i thought it would be prudent to get it serviced at Rolex (£200-pretty reasonable, i thought) it came with absolutely everything , inner, outer boxes, tags, cloth, stamped guarantee, even a horrible Rolex branded plastic pouch.Obviously, after its 22 year incarceration, it was completely unmarked, the strap had no creases etc, no hairline scratches, -nothing. I pondered if i should actually wear it but eventually thought it was a shame not to -so i do :-!
