Hello! It is, "I am buying 1 expensive watch, for me, for the year" time again. I have narrowed my choices to the 3 watches listed above and in the poll. Given those 3 choices, which would you go with?

Some background: I currently have a Seiko 5 (SNZH53J1), a Hamilton Khaki Field, and a beater G-shock for work. I have always loved the Nomos and was considering making it my first 'luxury watch' purchase, with the drawback being that I would not be able to wear it as much as the other choices. The Sinn 104 is another watch I've liked very much, however the price has gone up and it is specifically on the fine link bracelet that I do like it so much, otherwise it has less appeal. The Maurice Lacroix Aikon is another gorgeous watch and given that I dont have tens of thousands of dollars lying around, the closest to the AP RO, however I am not sure if the cost of it is justified in comparison to the Nomos.

Any feedback, advice, or experience with these watches is appreciated, thanks in advance!

The Orion is lovely. It sounds like that's the one you want.

Unless you are looking for a watch to wear 90% of the time, then get the Orion, enjoy it and don't worry about not wearing it too much.

For the OP, I recommend the Nomos. It's the one he wants the most, has no obvious drawbacks, and doesn't represent something else. If it was me... well that very simple watch costs nearly £2,000 and I don't think it's a great value proposition next to the significantly cheaper ML. The Aikon has a conventional movement that's likely to cost a lot less than the Nomos's low-volume, hand-finished movement, but its casework is a lot more complicated and the bracelet especially is finely machined.

The bracelet is also removable, with a quick-release system to allow an alternative (ML) strap to take its place.

The Nomos definitely has the nicer movement. The ML has issues from what I understand about getting alternative straps. The Sinn is a tank and can be a GADA. But I voted for the Nomos because it’s just nicer. Nothing rational really, just pure subjectivity. In the end, buy what you like the most.

Yes, it only takes notched straps from ML (although you could get one made and use conventional springbars). But generally you buy integrated-style bracelet watches if you like that look.

If I were to get the ML, I would have it on the bracelet 95% of the time, if not all the time, so if it came down to me wanting a strap, I'd probably just purchase an integrated strap directly from ML.

True. There are lots of options for custom straps. I prefer straps to bracelets, at least to butterfly clasp ones - I've never found the right fit without micro adjust.

If I were picking for myself, I'd go with the Sinn 104. While I love the look of the Nomos, I think over time I'd get tired of the long, flat lugs.

I do like both the Sinn and the ML, but the lack of proprietary lugs on the Sinn would push me in that direction - I love changing the look of a watch around with a simple strap change. The ML limits you pretty severly in that sense, even if it does look pretty spectacular.

But those are my tastes. What matters is what you think / want. If the Nomos draws your eye when you look at pictures of all 3, then go with that.

I would go with Nomos. You can dress it up or down, and most importantly it sounds like that’s the one you really want.

True, it can be dressed up or down pretty easily, but I'm still not 100% sure. I'm just careful with my decision because I know that it is a major purchase for me and not something I want to start selling and trading right now. I also have to think that I am able to get the Nomos right now and I dont know if will whenever time from now, while both of the other options are cheaper, understandable why there are, but just things I need to consider. I haven't, but I have heard of them, I think there is a boutique in the city that i may be able to check out. I haven't been able to find out a ton about them online.

If it's for me, I'd choose the Sinn 104 because it has dive watch aesthetics and I'm a dive watch guy. That timing bezel is something that I use everyday.

For you, I would suggest you do this: Pick your top two then flip a coin. You'll probably wish for a specific result while the coin is in the air. Buy that watch you were wishing for.

So it comes down to the Orion vs the Aikon. Two very different watches. Looking at your collection, I would get the Orion. It would make a very nice center piece to your collection. The ability to change straps would add versatility. I’d also be concerned that at some point down the line that Aikon will look dated, like “That’s from when everyone was into Genta-ish designs from the 70s”. The Orion could be in your collection forever and always look good.

The Nomos is the most aesthetically appealing to me but I wonder if you'll get much use out of it. Of the three watches you listed, the Sinn is likely the closest thing to an everyday watch but maybe you’ve got that covered with the hamilton. I’d second checking out the Wempe. I prefer the look to the ML - I think it’s less derivative.

I recently reconsidered the purchase of a dressier watch due to COVID - dinners at fine restaurants and social occasions that might call for a snazzy watch are on hold for the foreseeable future.

I do really like the Sinn stil. In regards to the Aikon, that's a fair point, I really do like the Aikon and how it looks now, especially how it's integrated bracelet is designed and the Gérald Genta influence, but not something that cannot be done differently, even more refined, while the Nomos is going to be part of a timeless bauhuas design.
