You say Cosmopolis... I say Kosmopolis...

Tomato... Tomaato...

However you say it, Lee and I want to know: What exactly is this Cosmopolis/Kosmopolis that keeps popping up on Russian watch faces (in this case Slava and Vostok).

We are sitting here and just realized we both have watches 'sponsored' by this organization, whatever it is. Can anyone out there tell us anything about Cosmopolis/Kosmopolis???

Greetings Lee and Mark.

Kosmopolis is Greek for city (polis) of the Cosmos, universe, (kosmos), so roughly Space-city, namely I suppose Baikonur Cosmodrome. Interesting watches.

And who is Lee?

A pleasure, Comrades. And is it an octagonal-case Amphibia on Tiyok's hand?

Hi again! I must confess that I do more 'lurking' than posting at this forum.
Thanks to Tiyok for the 'encouragement' and for the link that you'd sent me a while back as to a possible clue to the "Cosmopolis" dial.

This is one of those occasional meet-ups I 've with Mark and we decided to do an impromptu shot of the 2 watches when we realised the possible 'Kosmopolis/Cosmopolis' connection.
Greetings to all,
Lee

No, it's not.

I agree. The accompanying reference to Baikonur seals it for me.

The other sort of similar name is the place known in English as 'Star City', the training facility outside of Moscow. However in Russian it is Zvezdny-Gorodok, which is nothing like Kosmopolis.

If you translate Star City into Greek the result would be Astropolis! But apparently the Russians did not use this one. The Astro- part had been appropriated by the Amerikantsi in astronaut (from Greek for star-sailor).
Hello all and good approach OKEAH. Kosmopolis/Cosmopolis in greek (ΚΟΣΜΟΠΟΛΙΣ) means city of the world, or universal city. That means, always people from all over the world, visit it.

Another Greek I see... XAIPETE. That makes 2 of us, at least. You are quite right of course. In Russian KOCMOC has taken on the more specific meaning of SPACE.
