This was my last purchase of 2009. It is a gold plated Zodiac Olympos from the 1960's:

The dial is faceted into quarters - which kinda reflects the Zodiac logo.

The movement is marked 70 - 72, and as it has a date it is a Zodiac 72.

http://www.ranfft.de/cgi-bin/bidfun-db.cgi?10&ranfft&&2uswk&Zodiac_72

gives this as 'The calibre is based on the manual wind calibre AS 1687/1688.
The automatic mechanism is a joint development of Doxa, Eberhard, Favre-Leuba, Girard-Perregaux, and Zodiac.'

Mine, though, is marked as having only 17J - not 21.

Many thanks for looking!

Hi Marrick,

thanks for mentioning the number of jewels. I only mention numbers in my
archive which I've ever seen anywhere; and I've simply seen the Zodiac 72
only with 21 Jewels, while I had the high frequency successors already
with both, 17 and 21 jewels.

Especially the sample illustrated in the archve came from a very similar
model I sold in 2006:

Anyway. I'll extend the information in my archive accordingly.

Regards, Roland Ranfft

Cheers! that was a good one you sold - but I think the dial on mine is even nicer.;-)

And thank you - once again - for your pink pages.:-!

I can confirm the jewel count, though I must have missed the lack of reference to 17j movements on the good doctor's site. A while back I sold a Corsair with the same movement and the same jewel count.

As as aside, I became quite a fan of that movement in the course of servicing it... it's no Patek but the quality is more than reasonable. Additionally, I have this strange long-term (and, unfortunately, long-distance) love affair with the Olympos case design :). Good catch and a great way to say goodbye to 2009.

there's no chance I'll look as good as my Hamilton when I'm 70, especially since the Hamilton started with a better design. :)

Very nice piece, I'm envious;-). I bid on one unsuccessfully a while ago but at least someone around here has one to share. Wear it in good health in the new year.

Hi!

Congrats, that´s a very nice watch with an outstanding design!
BTW, in Hampel´s book Automatic Wristwatches from Switzerland, the Zodiac caliber 72 is mentioned only with 17 jewels.
