Hi f71!

We started this project in 2021 in the "Best of Ali-Xpress" thread at the time and now, four years later, it is finally making progress!

The project: a re-creation / homage of the historical Seiko 7548-700C 'teal/seafoam green' version, extremely limited and only produced in December of 1984!

Image

The homage: back in 2021 we came up – together with @cuica – with a name and a design for a dial.

Since the 'teal' 7548 was only produced in 1984, we picked The 'Snorky' (Snorks in english) as inspiration: it was a cartoon that aired the same year of 1984, with little sea creatures drawn in the style of Belgian comics writer Peyo's "the Smurfs".

A few refinements later and here is the latest design:

Below the original 2021 design, for reference:

The dimensions: the homage will be the exact same as the original Seiko 'Turtle' 7548/6309: 42mm case diameter, 46mm lug-to-lug, 22mm lugs.

The specs: 316L stainless steel case, screw-down crown and caseback, 120-click unidirectional bezel with ceramic insert, sapphire crystal, day+date Miyota 2105 quartz movement (3-year battery life with an SR626SW)

The specifics: the watch will be based off an Heimdallr/Keaso quartz SKX, with custom teal dial, teal chapter ring, golden hands, and black insert with gold writings.

The quantity: the watch will be produced to 25 samples with serial number stamped on the case back.

The price: still under negotiation but should be under $100.

Count me in for one of these!

@mougino are you planning to make any amends to the dial design based on Unikagen's feedback in the 'best of...' thread?

Hey Mougino! I'm not sure if you're aware, but the text isn't centered on the dial. "SNORKY", "QUARTZ" and "Water 150m resist" are off just a little. The "R517SW" at the bottom can do with a little rotation too, to make it symmetrical with the "H7548LE", if you know what I mean.

Also, I'd make the outline of the Snork illustration as thick as the thinnest line on the dial, to incorporate it a bit better with the rest of the dial elements. In this case I'd use the thickness of the line coming out of the 12, 6 and 9 markers as the correct outline width. :) Let me know if I can help.
I'd be happy with the design as it stands, but thought @Unikagen suggestions could be good. My only concern would be if the detail of the Snork logo gets lost if we use a thicker outline to match the other dial lines.

I'd also set the Snork logo slightly lower on the dial. I know that shortens the line from the 6 marker, but it would give the logo more space. It looks a bit cramped under the water resist text.

Cool! welcome to our small project ;) and yes: Unikagen is currently helping me refine the dial.

That is a valid concern, the original "quartz" logo on the Seiko was smaller than the Snork logo, I kept the same positions for each element but either we should make the Snork logo smaller, or move the "water 150m resist" a little higher. Your opinion @Unikagen ?

I'll make a few variations of the dial today after work. That way we can get a better idea of how all the little dial elements should balance out in the final rendition.

Cra@p....you HAD to give me a good reason to spend money on watches again, didn't you Nicolas? 🤣
I'm a huge fan if TRULY limited edition watches (not in the 5000-10000 units like Seiko and Omega) so please count me in.
I'd love to have a watch reminding me of this friendly gang and all the fun we have here cracking bad jokes and exchanging information about our hobby target: watches.

@mougino, could you decipher for me these bottom references? I think I get what the first one is, but the second?
H7548LE - Homage of a Seiko 7548 Limited Edition
R517SW - no clue... Was it mentioned before and I missed it?

1. I second the idea of doing something with placement of the WR text and Snork head. The head indeed looks too much squeezed between the WR and 6 o'clock index and too close to the latter. Moving it up a bit, perhaps?

2. I really like the look of the original on a jubilee bracelet - would it even be possible to swap out? That is if others would be interested in it. I know that Heimdallr sells their SKX clomages with both bracelets to choose from.

3. How about putting putting somewhere something like "WUS BoAX 2025" reference? Maybe on the caseback? :)

"R517SW" was an old label, from when we approached Steeldive in 2021 to customize their quartz SKX 'Abalone' model, equipped with a Ronda R517SW movement.
Since we're now talking with Heimdallr, using a Miyota 2105 mov't, we'll replace that part with "M2105 Japan".

1. Unikagen is the man with the Photoshop skills 😉 (and license 😂), he should give us a dial update this week hopefully, stay tuned... (we're all doing this in parallel of our jobs, please bear with us as delays might/will happen)

2. I thought about the bracelet for sure, it seems to be a weak point of the Keaso quartz SKX based on online reviews.
As a matter of fact, there's one (un-customized) Keaso on the way to me as we speak, to get an idea of what we'll get... If the bracelet is really so bad I'll ask for alternatives.

3. Not sure if admins/website will see of a good eye that we use "WUS" advertising on the watch, since this is more of a private initiative. If you guys really want it mentioned, we'd have to ask the permission officially.

I don’t know about Snorky but this is looking like an excellent homage build. The fact it’s quartz ups the cool factor.

Including the battery type “SR626SW” on the periphery of the dial could be useful for owners down the road.

The project is in good hands :) Thumbs up for you, guys.

Yikes... I obviously haven't thought of that. Of course "WUS" branding could be omitted. I just remembered you putting something similar in your Concorde dial project at some point.

Most definitely in.

For the Snork at 6 - what about just using a solid silhouette of a Snork head? This might turn out better in printing, would mirror the Seiko quartz symbol, and might be less likely to infringe on any Snork IP
I get what you mean and tried it, but you lose all sense of the Snorkness when you fill in the entire outline of its head. The big eyes are what kinda give it its identity. If you make a silhouette of the face, it starts looking more like a bottle or a musical note than a character. Try it, and I'm sure you'll agree. :)

I made this for you, to hopefully illustrate that only the one in the middle is instantly recognizable as a Snork:

Mougino and me are working on several ideas. I'm sure we can make it work! :)

No worries, I am just fine-tuning the details, this is not a community project per se and certainly not one open to polls. The watch will resemble the picture in the front post at 99%.

To be absolutely transparent: Uni and I are finishing the dial working on the zone at 6' (Snork logo and "water 150m resist"), then maybe I will change the bracelet to a jubilee depending on the actual Keaso bracelet quality (I'm expecting a sample for test). And that's it!

I will publish a participants list later today to start making things 'official'.

My Heimdallr contact is unavailable this end of week, I will resume talks with them next week and hopefully progress on the price front, then we'll be able to take Paypal reservations.

Since everyone is from different parts of the world I will make individual shippings and you'll refund me the shipping price at the very end.

With a quantity of 25 this will be a 1-man operation and I'll make everything to make it fly 'under the radar', as I have some experience sending watches to EU/US/AU if that can reassure you... That means there should be no bad surprise when receiving the watch 🤞

Stay tuned for more 😉

Nicolas
