5600 models compared:DW5600-G5600-GW5600-GW-M5600

Hi guys,

Well, since some of you have suggested (and pursuaded me) to buy a 5600 model, I've been trying to figure out what the differences are between the DW-5600, G-5600 and GW-5600.
There is plenty of information on these in loads of different posts, but since I'm new to g-shocks I thought it might be handy to summarize a few things.

Please correct me if you think that the information is not right, or if I've missed some important feature's!

According to information I found in several posts, these are some of the differences that are mentioned most often:

DW-5600: (module 1545 )
PRO's: Low cost. Displays both day and date at the same time. El lighting (DW-5600E only). Dual time ( vintage DW-5600C only).
CON's: Does not have Tough Solar technology. Does not have waveceptor technology. The countdown timer can be set only in one direction: up +. Does not have world time. Has smaller digits than the G-5600 and GW-5600.

G-5600:(module 2597)
PRO's: Has Tough Solar technology. Accepts strap adaptors. Has a large countdown timer and stopwatch ( both 100 Hrs). Displays both day and date at the same time. The countdown timer can be set by scrolling up + or down -. Current time remains visible in all modes except stopwatch. Dual time. Auto EL. Has large digits.
CON's: Does not have waveceptor technology. Is slightly smaller, thinner and lighter than the GW or DW.

GW-5600: (module 2924)
PRO's: Has Tough Solar technology. Has waveceptor technology (Us and Japan only). Shows world time in 30 cities. Auto EL. Full auto calender. Large digits.
CON's: Has a short countdown timer (60 minutes) and stopwatch (24 Hrs). Does not show day and date at the same time. Current time is not visible in other modes.

UPDATE: GW-M5600 (module 3063)
PRO's: Has Tough Solar technology. Has 5 band waveceptor technology ((US, Japan, Europe). Large digits, Day and date both displayed, Stopwatch 1000 Hours. Current time displayed in countdown mode. Tone can be muted, 5 alarms.
CON's: Has (still) a short countdown timer of 60 minutes. Current time is not visible in stopwatch mode.

The case size of the new GW-M5600 : 46.7x43.2x12.7mm /51.7

The case of the G-5600 is at 12,1mm and 52 grams slightly less chunky than the GW-5600 and DW-5600 which are 13,4mm thick and weigh 54 grams. Seeing the watches side by side it becomes obvious that the G-5600 has a slightly smaller bezel than the GW-5600. The bezel of the GW-5600 is thicker, wider and taller and has more of a square appearance while the G-5600 is more rectangular.

Some of you mention also that the GW-5600 looks better than the other models. There are also differencens in opinion about the band being more comfortable on one model or the other. The GW-5600BCJ (and now also a version of the GW-M5600) offer a composite bracelet.

Thank you for this. Invaluable comparison! Going through the same purchasing dilema myself. It's good to have this sort of thing as a sticky.

I know this is just me but it seems the more choice we have, the easier it is to be unsatisfied with the options.
eg:
- The gorgeous looking GW5600 (+ve) but with a day display.
- The GW-M5600-1JF but with the BC-1JF's bracelet.

In all fairness you forgot to mention that the 5600C is the solid steel "hocky puck" body. The rest are the composite resin bodies.

It says in the (old) review that the GW-M5600 has auto-EL. is this true, and if so, how do you turn it on/off?

Nice lineup. That makes it easy to compare. I'm curious how the volume of the different 5600's is. There doesn't seem to be much information about that or are they all, like my mtg, low volume.
The G-SHOCK text on the GW5600 bezel is irl a bit more grayish (wearing it right now). Like this.

I suspect that the DW-5600 volume is the loudest. It is the same volume as the DW-6600 and G-7900. Someone else can verify its volume compared to the other 5600's. In my opinion, that is a major draw back of most of the newer models - they are just too quiet for me.

I read the original post but am still not confident. I'm trying to replace the bezel and band on my GWM5625E (http://www.casio.com/products/archive/Timepiece/G-Shock/GWM5625E-7/) It's not that the band broke its just that its become discolored over time. Therefore, I'm trying to replace it with a different color (preferably black/silver). I called the parts department and they were unable to match it with any other bands.

Ideally I would like to swap it with the DW5025D-8 band and bezel. (http://www.casio.com/products/Timepiece/G-Shock/DW5025D-8/)

Does anyone know if the bands and bezels are interchangeable between module 3063 and 1545?

^ Unfortunately, the G-5600 has a unique shape (a kind of "stretched out DW-5600). There is no other G-Shock model that is compatible. You might be able to order bezel parts from CASIO directly, though.

This is great review!
I hope someone can help me here. I am interested in 5600 models compared but without bezel. So comparison between 5600 modules (shape, thickness..) or maybe they are all same, only bezel is different?
Thanks!

I wonder if there is a website that allows users to select features of G Shock models and thus filter in the results. This would be useful for finding current or discontinued models in Casio's vast range that match the user's needs.

Heh... this thread was started in 2007 and still gets jolted back to life from time to time.

No... there are so many features in common, it would be rather tedious to do it. The features people usually want to know more about are the timers--CDT (countdown timer) and STW (stopwatch). As in how many are included, what are their durations, and are there any other features like progress beepers, auto-repeat, etc. There are a few threads on these that you can search on.

But the usual routine is someone comes to WUS and posts what features they're looking for in a G-Shock and then receives some recommendations. Seeing how you're posting in the 5600 models thread, I can tell you that there are 3 main functional categories of the 5600 series: basic, solar/atomic, and moon/tide graph (GLX). The STW and CDT durations will vary depending upon the model. For example, the GW-M5600 and GW-M5610 look very much the same but have different CDT/STW durations (see post).

Re: 5600 models compared:DW5600-G5600-GW5600-GW-M5600

GW-M5610-1CR just arrived from (princetonwatch) and fully charged pristine and melted onto my wrist. i had constructed all of my wishes, wants, needs, and musts on several lists over the past months. comparing my watches, this is my third Casio to my DW-5600E and GB-X6900B and I am most pleased with all, giving the different functions I want from them. I will likely scrub my 25 yr olds, a 3H and a phillipines Ironman. My two other Ironmans remain for HRM abilities, which are on/off the wrist, so not so stringent requirements. all rounded out for the nice but now heavy glamor girl my Citizen eco-drive bracelet. Comparing the derivations of DW-5600s through the GW-M5610s makes me almost fatigued, except that it is very comforting to see in the forum that others have similar mindedness. I love it that I can keyboard with ease, and never have a watch that gets in my way now - at least none of my Casios have - including my Smurf Bluetooth, which saves my phone from the pocket yanking 30x per work day.
Although, as I last counted near a dozen watches, I need to unload some before I have an invitation to Watch Hoarders and have Dr Phil consulted.
But, I digress. As Casio brings out many updated versions, these will likely be a larger and larger thread, to the point that people getting the ZZW-ZM5600EZ future models will look back surprisingly and see that the derivations are not "where man has not traveled".
Requirements that lead me to GW-M5610-1CR: 1. very lightweight. 2. not cumbersome for keyboarding and wrist movements. 3. must Not scratch other valuable objects such as nicely painted vehicle side panels when a wayward armswing strikes car. 4. reliable solar. I am tired of battery worry. didn' find a kinetic lightweight. 5. atomic / RC clocked accurate. no more changing here and there. 6. easily readable daylight. 7. chronographic. CDT and ST available. 8. darkness readable in some version either one handed or A-EL or luminescent for the wee hours or eclipses. 9. tough. so G-shock is about it other than ironman. (well - affordable tough.) 10. I should be able to put it on, and not necessarily take it off, so it has to blend maximally comfortingly on wrist. which goes back to #1.
my GW-M5610-1CR at 99usd included shipping and I had to jump away from my AMZ Prime, which actually increased over 5usd as I placed it on my wish list. glad I went the new site. So far I can say I have never worn a Casio I didn't really enjoy. Even more so than my previous favorite and 3 grams lighter now dying "unfixable" burned out Luminox 3000 dive watch whose crown finally fell out and time cannot be changed, and whose battery will die with the face being inaccurate.
happily reviving this thread. (-:

Glad to hear the 5610 meets your expectations! Princeton is where I bought my 5610. They provide a decent selection and super fast shipping.
