I'm looking for a Big date, preferable without Roman numerals. Requirements:
  • Any complication needs to be functional
  • Stainless steel case
  • 44mm or less
  • Affordable = as cheap as possible
  • Quartz, auto or manual

I like what A.L & S has to offer. any decent homages out there?

Thanks!

That is actually pretty affordable. Do wish it had the bigger double date window, though.

Mido have some big date automatic watches with some dressy versions in the Baroncelli line. Limes also have the Pharo Big Date Power Reserve. However, they are only affordable relative to Lange - the Mido watches are about US $1,000 and the Limes is about 1,400 euro.

The only quartz watch with a big date I know of is a Mondaine (about US $300), but it is a very different style to Lange. However, it at least shows that there are quartz big date movements so there may be other options with a more dressy style.

Wow, that looks sharp! Gonna bookmark that one...

OP said he prefers without Roman numerals, but I like them.

Btw, that's the "Adventic", right?

Version in black is pretty good looking too, IMO:

And there's one with a "silver" dial as well:

Haha, the hunt is a big part of the fun! :D

Well, what direction are you leaning? Give us more criteria so we can help focus the suggestions in that direction and narrow it down:

- Style: dress, sport, casual, tool? field, diver, pilot, other?
- Dial color: light or dark? or any specific color you prefer?
- Size: ideal size and acceptable range?
- Movement: leaning quartz or mechanical?
- Cost: elaborate on "as cheap as possible": any minimum requirements (sapphire crystal, water resistance, etc.)?
- Inspiration: let us know what elements of any of the suggested options you like and we can try to look for one that combines all or most of what you like.

Your best bet, the closest I could absolutely find to the Lange in this price range, will have to look to Germany. Of course, almost all the Glashütte I saw were priced in the thousands, but there was one in the 600-700 range: Bruno Söhnle Glashütte.

BRUNO SÖHNLE GLASHÜTTE Hamburg II 42mm Quartz 17-13205-961

Bruno Söhnle Pesaro II 17-13073-283
15574735

Bruno Söhnle Facetta Chrono 17 13166 841
15574736

Bruno Söhnle Chronograph Stuttgart Small 17-13178-841
15574744

Bruno Söhnle Lago GMT 17-13156-241
15574743

Bruno Söhnle Stuttgart II 17-13179-249

Another company in a lot lower price range ($200-300) that has a lot of dressy big dates is Swiss company Claude Bernard:

Claude Bernard Sophisticated Classics retrograde

Claude Bernard Classic Big Date Small Second CB64005-3-BUIN
15574758

BIG DATE RETROGRADE 41001 3 AIN
15574759

Claude Bernard Classic Big Date ($170)
15574763

Edox Les Vauberts Day Retrograde Großdatum 34500 3 AIN ($600?)
15574713

And since you seemed to be looking at some chronographs:

ZENO-WATCH BASEL, Retro Magellano Q Chrono Grossdatum, weiss 6069-5040Q-g2 ($520)
15574685

Zeno-Watch Basel -Watch Herrenuhr Magellano Chronograph Quartz 6069-5040Q-g1 ($450)
