Are Speedmasters just better on a strap?

I've had a 3570.50 for a couple years now, wore it on the bracelet a few times, and it was all fine and good. But it wasn't until I switched out the bracelet for a leather strap that the watch finally clicked for me. The watch honestly looks and feels so much better, a world of difference. I'm beating myself up for not making the change earlier.

And thinking about the NASA missions and the moonwatch on a strap, it made me wonder if Speedmasters are just simply a better watch being off its bracelet

Bought it on strap but I prefer the bracelet now. I am more partial to bracelets in general though.

I have trouble being satisfied with anything other than metal bracelets too. Suppose a nice and flexible alligator strap could be nice in an office setting, but I feel the bracelet is just far more friendly to everyday life than both nato and leather. Takes a beating and takes seconds to clean

Think the versatility of the speedmaster looking fantastic on any strap is what makes it such a great watch. Bought it on a bracelet, went onto Nato, then strap and at the moment back on the bracelet......for now.

See your taste in pens matches your taste in watches. Bought a rapid pro pen many years ago when I sold off my fisher ag7. It's been through the ringer so I've had to modify it several times to keep it working. Mostly stopped carrying click pens in favor of twist and bolt action to avoid the accidental activation though.

Bought mine and wore it on the bracelet for 6 years until it was time for a service, and then I ordered a strap for when I picked it up.

All of the Speedmaster bracelets are great for their own reasons, but I think it looks better on a strap. One of the best and key features of the case design is the twisted lugs. They can kind of blend in with a bracelet endlink, but are really emphasized on a strap.

Next time it needs a service, whenever that is, I'll probably order an 1171, assuming they are still selling them, and go back to bracelet, lol.

Yes. The bracelet is much too dominant and blingy for the Speedy. It completely hides the beauty of the twisted lugs and reduces the watch to a generic mass of steel from a distance.

Straps all day long.
Twisted lugs.. this is a really good call. Makes a lot of sense. Probably explains why the change to a strap felt so different, and better.

True, a bracelet doesn't demand the same care and attention. I definitely notice myself being overly conscious of the strap around water. With a bracelet, it's not a second thought, and I much prefer not having to think about it.

I think the problem is the chunky bracelet on the 3570.50. I have one too and could never get along with it. Links are too long and thick, endlinks extend the lug-to-lug, and it's limiting with only two microadjust holes.

Since playing around with aftermarket bracelets from Uncle Seiko and/or Forstner, it's been a revelation. I almost never want to wear my Speedy on straps anymore. I just picked up the Uncle Seiko 1479 (similar to the current 3861 bracelet) and it's my favourite one so far.
The bracelet IS chunky! I'll look into this bracelet. Thanks for the rec!

In my opinion no. Because of the placement of the springbar holes, a conventional two piece strap results in a large gap between the end of the strap and the case. To me, this isn't a particularly good look.

That said, I think the curved end straps designed to fit a Speedmaster look great. I also think many leather and nylon NATO straps and one piece Perlon straps look just fine.

The bracelet option is nice and there's nothing wrong with it, but I almost exclusively wear my sapphire sandwich on Omega natos. The combination just works so well. I've mentioned in another thread that my Speedmaster has become my go-to travel watch when strapped on a nato. It easily flies under the radar, and with the easy strap changes, works with any outfit when traveling.

Imho the general consensus to fully enjoy a speedy is to buy a fullset hesalite with bracelet, immediately remove the bracelet, and enjoy with different leather and nato straps.
Unlike modern rolexes, modern omega does not make good looking bracelet. Also, On my po, I had issue with omega bracelet clasp many times and found it annoying esp. When the extension popped out on its own.

My used Speedmaster came on a leather strap, so has nearly always lived on one.

I did buy an Alpha Speedmaster style bracelet for it and it looked good, but I switched back to leather, because I just like leather straps and I think the Speedmaster works well on one.

Currently, it's on a Di-Model Rallye strap.

I like mine both ways myself, to me the bracelet is definitely more comfortable and the clasp is very well executed, but the strap is way more elegant and compliments the watch better.
My Triple Date came with a cheap strap, but I was able to source an NOS original alligator double ribbed curved lug strap, NOS deployant buckle with the gold Omega plaque logo (literally impossible to find) and the NOS bracelet with the hidden clasp like this watch would have originally come with.
I only wear the leather strap in the cold months to keep from ruining it with sweat.
