Finally picked up the GW-M5610. I really like the legibility and the screen layout. I also have a few of the new Bluetooth models and just wondering if they'll be making the GW series obsolete?

No, not really. BT is a nifty little feature...... but MB6 is the preference day in/ day out for those of use who have access to the tower signals................

If I had to choose; I prefer the Bluetooth. I live in the New York City area and find mutliband iffy at best. East coast is pretty far from the signal. Also, the buildings and overall interference of the city mess things up.
To be honest, I don't think either of them are all that important, since digi watches are pretty damn accurate. The cheapo 5600 has a great module that more than makes up for its lack of multiband and solar.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but there are not a lot of options if you're looking for a positive display with Bluetooth. I do have the full metal square SS with positive display. I need a positive display on a digi.

As for the 5610: That thing ain't going anywhere! Probably one of Casio's best sellers overall. Take a look at the secondhand market, they sell really quick!

As owner of several M5610, I am a fan, but it has been obsolete for a longtime for another reason than BT.....as it has no current time showing in STW and Timer modes.

I love this new B5600 as it fixed the mode issue in addition to BT.

Does the GW-M5610 still sync via MB6 and tell the time accurately? Yes. Therefore - it's not obsolete.

The BT models provide some added functionality, that's all. But that's true of many different Gs.

As long as new modules are MB6 and Bluetooth, I can see the argument that MB6-only will be more obsolete. If BT replaces MB6, I say no. Just yesterday a co-worker showed me her phone (an Android) and its time was seven minutes off. My understanding is that BT syncs with network time on the phone. In that case with hers, I would trust MB6 more!

Some of the recent non-square Casios with auto time sync are BT only. Two examples are the GBD-800 and the GBA-800.

Also, the Casio app seems to use atomic time, not phone time, to do the syncing. This is according to T4PN in another recent post. Others have mentioned this in the past as well. Time station emulator apps (for JJY, WWVB, etc) seem to use the phone time rather than atomic time.

Anything that depends on a proprietary technology like Bluetooth will be useless in a decade.

If you want your watch to sync to your smartphone, then just get a smart watch. You'll most likely need to replace your Bluetooth G-Shock in a few years as well.

Thanks, @GaryK30. I always enjoy reading your posts. A BT-only watch doesn't interest me personally; I like being able to sync without a phone.

I wonder how the app would pull atomic time and not network time, though. Is the app using the phone to receive that long wave signal somehow? I mean, it has to be getting its data from somewhere. I do remember reading a member writing about deliberately changing the time on his phone, and his watch still corrected itself through the BT app to the "correct" time.

There's something survivalist and fun to me about a MB6 watch, though. I can't quite put my finger on it, but my solar atomic watches being disconnected is appealing to me. [emoji3526]

I prefer MB6 as well. It works 95% of the time here in So Cal. For those who live in areas without MB6 reception, BT sync is a nice benefit.

Regarding the app, I suspect it's connecting to a network time server that is set to atomic time -- something like time.is.

Is the only benefit of the Bluetooth models the fact that it syncs the time with the app? That’s it?

If so, no. It won’t make the old model obsolete. It’s just a different flavor for a different palate.

Full disclosure, I just ordered a solar multi and 56 series.

I have MB-6 on at least 5 of my G’s and it works flawlessly and without fail on each of them . In my case anyway, BT would be more of an unnecessary complication without providing much benefit. ( If I were younger and still frequently traveling internationally I likely would appreciate the BT complication ).
