This may only apply to some areas of the world, and the enthusiasts circles, because Casio does seem to produce a lot of them with quite a few variations, and I'm thinking they wouldn't if it was not a good seller.

However, where I live, and in enthusiast forums/blogs, youtube channels, you rarely, if ever, see this model pop up.

The G-Shock AWG-M100.

What’s so great about this G-Shock ? Well, it has a unique combination of features build and versatility that no other G-Shock does.

- Size and shape. This is the most comfortable G-Shock with Solar and Multiband 6, ana-digi. By far. I have so many G-Shocks but none of the models feels as slick, light, balanced and comfortable as this one. No, not even the lightest squares. The combi bracelet is also amazingly comfortable thanks to the taper.
The shape of the case makes it feel rugged, a bit tubby but not too much, it looks awesome, and it wears amazingly well on wrists from 6 inch to over 8 inch. Is THAT versatile.

- Ana-digi. No matter how much I love my lcd only watches, the reality is that analog can be much easier to read at a glance or from angles. This watch has the best of both worlds, like all ana-digi watches.

- The strap has this great property that it conforms to your wrist in just a few days and it keeps that exact shape. I know most G-Shocks kinda do this, but not in the same way as this one, and much more than any other G-Shock this allows you to wear it a bit looser. The balanced nature of the watch head and strap size/weight also helps a lot with this. The combi bracelet that comes on some model is amazing too.

At first I overlooked this model, the 3 round LCD's looked a bit weird so I haven't gave it a try for a few years. Then, because they are so cheap where I live (nobody wants them) I bought one, took it for a "spin" Boy, how wrong I was overlooking this G-Shock. It's so good. It looks awesome, it is mighty comfortable, it is very legible and usable, it is so versatile to wear.

I know there are some G-Shocks similar in shape and size, but they lack at least one or all of the features: Solar, Multiband, Ana-Digi.

Needless to say I own 12 variations as of today :)))

But I'm just curious, why do people overlook this great model ? I guess it's the design, mainly the 3 round LCD's but I could be wrong. let me know.

Big 'n chunky or square often wins the day for me because they're so much fun, and their digital displays are easier to read, but occasionally I'll wear my AWG if I'm in the mood and don't care about the digits.

Additionally, my MRG-7600D is about the same size as the AWG and has easier to read digits (and dare I say nicer finishing haha), so if I'm in the mood for that size watch I'll often reach for it instead.

But the AWG is a good 'un and has its place in the rotation, albeit only occasionally.

As to why it's not more popular, I think at least one factor has to be that as a whole, the AW family wasn't as successful as some other lines.

Of the 21 main references released since 1989, only two form factors remain in production. The original AW-500E is reprised by the recent (2021) retro-reissues, the AWG-M520 and AWM-500. The AWG-100 design, which was released in AWG-101 in 2007, was very lightly refreshed to the AWG-M100 in 2012, then not again until the AWR-M100 in 2021. So, few and far between.

The pace of those refreshes suggests a pattern of marketing based on color, collab, or other variations that is very different from its contemporaries, like the DW-6900 which has at least 163 variations since 1995. In other words, it was hype-starved. Also, as this family chart shows, they tried a lot of things in terms of design and function...and the vast majority of them failed. Meaning they didn't last very long and certainly not to the present day.

The extinct watches are above the year-line. The active references are below.

I'm glad that they continue to produce the AWG-M100. Although there aren't many references, and you can't always find what you want in your home market, it fills a particular niche and so lives on. I'm grateful for that.

Excellent watches. The lume is actually OK, for telling the time, all night. If they would shorten the lume indicators to make it less difficult to see the minute hand, that would be great. The orange one has NO lume on the markers, only the hands. Well, that's no solution either. ALMOST, Casio, ALMOST...

I did use the blue one as a work watch, briefly, but the alarm chime was too weak.

Ooops, sorry for the dust, and the lumpy, uneven screen protectors.

Also: they almost always sync!

I like my AWG-M100A-1A, other than the negative LCDs are very difficult to read unless they are directly lit. I also wish the LCDs were illuminated at night (dual illuminator).

I got mine for just over $50 during an Amazon lightning deal, which is probably the best deal I ever got on a new G.

I've been wearing one of these for a long time. If the digital windows were backlit, it would be great imo.

Without backlit digital windows. I can't change the alarm, timer, etc. except in good lighting, much less in the dark. That is a pretty big issue.

Its overlooked simply because it has poor night time visibility. There is only a single amber LED used to illuminate only the face of the watch from the 6'oclock position and it does a poor job doing so. Infact, it becomes worse when the dial has a darker colour which is true for majority of the models of the AWG. This coupled with the negative LCD display segments on most variations which are left without any illumination and are hard to read makes it a deal breaker for many, including me. I owned one and while it fit well, I wasn't impressed with the backlight. Its bigger and more advanced counterpart the GAW/GAS-100 on which subsequent G-Steel models and the Mudmaster GWG/GSG-100 is based on is more popular due to the fact that it resolves the critical shortcomings the AWG had while retaining the same layout and functions.

For me it is one of the best G-Shocks. It is quite small, has all* the features that I like and wears just fine.

*There are three things to upgrade, that would elevate this watch (ymmv) to a amazing tool watch:
1. Fully lumed hands
2. Better and stronger lume
3. Backlit lcd screens (or even better - OEM lumed lcd screens)

Just seeing this thread made me choose it this morning :)

It might be overlooked here in the forum but i guess its sold well enough to the general public.
If you want a cheap but durable watch for the elderly (they dont care for the LCD informations) its perfect.
I myself gave away 2 of those.
Older people struggle with the small numbers when setting other watches to DST etc.
And they will not join the WRUW thread here!
So this one is just fine; auto setting and auto charging! :)
I still own 2, one older AWG-100 and one newer AWG-M100

  • guy posts thread asking why specific model is ignored
  • everyone who replies loves the watch; none have ignored it..
;)

(I almost ignored this THREAD) :ROFLMAO:

Okay, I HAVE ignored the watch, so let me answer your question. You are correct! It is the design, and the 3 round LCDs.

No. 1, if an analog G doesn't have a second hand, I'm not a fan, immediately - and will probably NOT give that watch a 2nd glance. No. 2, if the watch doesn't have some instant visual appeal to me and/or visual appeal doesn't develop over time, that's it for me. That's two strikes on this watch for me - and I'm out.

Maybe this is the most superficial view ever, but if I'm not drawn to the looks of a watch, I don't care how comfortable it is or what features it has, or how inexpensive it is. There are some models that ppl show on this forum that I have zero interest in, and that is unlikely to change.

This is probably a GREAT G, as you suggest. But it won't end up on my wrist. No harm/no foul. We each have our preferences.

It’s definitely nice, but no way in heck you’re gonna be able to read those lcd ports after 45.
