If you want the Daytona, I'm not sure there's a substitute but there's a lot of chronographs under 3K. Used Speedy is always a consideration; Hamilton Intra Matic is highly reviewed; Sinn 103 looks great but check to see whether the dimensions work for you.

 

A bit over your budget, but i would recomend you an IWC Ingineur AMG. You're not getting a "Daytona look", your're getting a unique design mad bye Gerald Genta, the one who als designed Royal Oak and Nautilus.

 

LOTS of threads on watches in this price range. Use the search engine here to pull some of them up for comparisons.

 

Nothing close to a Daytona in appearance but the Seiko 6139 chronographs are pretty worthwhile.

Speedmaster Racing for my money. Can be had under $3k.

 

Not sure about looking like a Daytona but if you get on Jomashop and search there is a TON of chronos in the $1,000-$3,000 range...Longines, Mido, Tissot, Hamilton, MontBlanc, Certina, etc

interesting enough I found this for $750 which I know nothing about the brand but considering there are some charging $599 for watches with a NH35 inside this day/date/chrono with a display back seems like a good value, i'm sure it's just a standard 7750 but still...

 

My opinion, the 7750 is the movement by which all the others are measured. I don't believe you can go wrong with any watch housing the 7750 all right. There are bargain watches out there that contain a7750 you just have to read the small print.

 

Tudor Tiger Chronograph at around $3,300.

 

In terms of movements, this watch may not be the best but in terms of beauty (subjective I know) this one wins it for me. The Longines Heritage Classic with the Tuxedo Dial. At precisely $3,000

 

If you want close to daytona then search for a gevril auto chrono, looks like the early version Newman. Prices are coming up but they used to be a decent price. I would also look at Sinn.

 

Tudor Black Bay Chrono? More than $3000 but worth it.

 

Raymond Weil has a great fit and finish for the price and shouldn't set you back more than $1500.

 

I'd go with a pre-owned omega speedmaster reduced

 

My choice is the Tag Heuer Carrera CV2113. Some other options just above that range are the re-edition and Jack Heuer variants...

Damasko DC80. Unlike every other chrono posted here, it has a minute counter you can actually read at a glance. The bidirectional 12-hour bezel allows you to time up to twelve hours or track a second time zone.

Full disclosure: I own a few conventional chronos as well but if you actually want to use the chronograph, the central minutes counter cannot be beat.

 

I thought all the DC80 chronos had different numbering on the bezel than your picture shows. Like at one, it's 55, at 2 it's 50 and so on. Is this an older version before they started doing that?

 

Speedmaster, Tudor, Hamilton Intra-matic are all really nice chronographs.

 

I'd vote Speedmaster reduced, or get a Baltic Bi-Compax for dirt cheap and buy a bunch of straps.

 

A lot of people saying the speedmaster and I agree. Tag also has some beautiful Carreras in that range.

In that case, maybe a pre-owned Tudor Fastrider?

Personally, I'd take a good look at the Tag Heuer Carreras, just like others already suggested.

But there are so many options. Sinn, Guinand, Alpina makes great chronos, too, and Porsche Design can be found for that price, too.
