I was wondering if their are any parameters for long term watch storage?
Should they be left in the box, not in a box, sealed in a zip-lock, wood, plastic or metal container?
I wonder if the storing method effects the degrading of the metals, plastics, dial faces as much as temperature and humidity does? Anyone have any knowledge or opinions.

Both what mario and Bandito said is entirely correct, however even with occasional windup and run time oils can still congest/clot over a very long period of time. To add to this, rubber seals do also age, degrade and slowly become stiff (greased or not, though it does help if they are).

I fully understand the need to preserve and prolong our well loved watches, however, in my mind the whole idea of purchasing something I love and then locking it away out of site and out of mind is something I can't bring myself to do.

I take as many precautions as I can, but I have my collection displayed in a way as to bring me a smile every day I wake up and every night I go to sleep.

I have a display cabinet in my bedroom, for which I have fabricated custom watch stands to help display my lovelies. The cabinet is in a darker corner and my curtains are drawn most of the time. I have installed LED lighting which does not emit any UV, but have them turned down to 10% brightness and they are on a timer for 7:30pm to 10:30 pm only. There is nothing better than to look at my cabinet during the dark of night and see all those little faces glowing back at me.

I am happy to sacrifice a small fraction of my collections lifetime so that I may enjoy them, and that is why I collect them, for my enjoyment.

mariomart #10 they called it love)))).

Totally agree. The watch collection in a drawer locked in the nontransparent boxes is not for me too. I need to look at them every day and should be able to wear any of. Depending of the mood.
I can not make a fully transparent shelf with stands I my apartment, but I have a 3d printer and started to print separate display boxes per watch I have. Will put them on a sliding IKEA Pax module and maybe show the result after some time. I'm not sure, because one box takes appr 10hrs to be printed, so it is another time consuming hobby)))

I agree with all of you, I was curious to know if the common storage methods may give off gasses or have negative effects over a long period of time in storage due to the materials or combinations of materials used to store watches.
I know it seems I am being a nitpicker but I am surprised some watch standards organization has no standards on watch storage. I keep mine in a wooden gentleman's chest but unfortunately I think my wooden gentleman's chest would only provide "overflow storage" for mariomart's collection :)

(I apologize for the clutter, i was trying to hammer a Raketa 2609 franken practice movement into working shape but something ain't right with it)

I have mine in a couple of 8 slot watchboxes. One cheaper that has the more robust watches and a better one with actual glass and smaller slots for the vintage and/or smaller watches. Also, a few packets of silica absorption packets thrown in as i live in a very hot and moist country. Both boxes are close to the window but (right under it really) but do not actually get any much direct sunlight. Spare parts, tools and project watches are in a drawer and bulk of straps i still have remaining occupy another with watch boxes somewhere in the house.

The only exception being a watch that came from my great uncle (Grandpa's older cousin or uncle, i don't recall exactly), which is the standard Type-1 converted into a wristwatch with a very early paper replacement dial that is kept in a box far from anybody just in case it might start glowing a little. (And because it's a little too unwieldy to wear)

Back to the main topic :)
I keep then in the watch boxes, with moisture absorption packets and covered from any light (cardboard lids on top of each box).
I wind every watch once per year

I used spongy foam to make my watch chest light tight as most of my watches are not in boxes.
