BEST Sinn under $2k (pre-owned)

I'm a small collection guy - G-Shock for workouts, dive watch, simple dress/office watch, and a solid tool. I have a Seiko SKX for dive, and Nomos Tangente for the office. I need a good bang-for-buck, versatile, durable tool watch and have fallen in love with Sinn as a brand. If I didn't have an SKX, I would have already bought the U50 but I don't want the redundancy. I don't like anything too big, over 40mm is pushing it but slim is more important than small... I don't have any experience with Sinn in the flesh, but I know how watches with the same measurements can wear differently, so I'm not setting exact size limits. Looking for something comfortable, versatile and durable.

What would you all say is the BEST Sinn offering at or under $2000 (pre-owned, realistically)? Does not have to be one of the models pictured below, just using those as reference...

Gotta think if you want the prototypical workhorse Sinn under 2k it would be a Sinn 104 on bracelet. Lots of options with the different faces - black / white and some of the variations in gray, green etc. I actually like the black dial with the numbered variant. It looks more like a pilot watch to me than the more standard dial with subseconds. Screw down crown and 200 meter water resistance so basically a functioning dive watch while dressy enough to wear to work or dress down with jeans. Just an excellent watch.

I vote 104 if you want/need a rotating bezel (I prefer the matter version), otherwise 556i. If you’re up for something a little more durable/toolish, EZM3/3F. I also love the 756 if you want to try a chrono, though it does wear tall. The 756 is a tough watch though (hardening, Argon anti-humidity, anti-magnetic cage, special lubricant…

The Sinn U1.
Normally I wouldn’t get excited about a dive watch with a SW200, unidirectional bezel and screw down crown, but the U1 is such an original design; I also appreciate that it’s metallurgically interesting and highly functional. My wrists are small, and it wears really well.

As an alternative the 103 Acrylic. I got mine to replace a Damasko DC56 that I didn’t gel with.

The 103 doesn’t wear thick, due to the effect of the steel case, anodised bezel and top hat crystal. It’s also very pretty, something I didn’t appreciate until I had one.

Both the 556 and 104 are fine, but I don’t find either compelling, and the 104 in particular feels like a neutered 103

I have one on order and can’t comment as an owner yet. Quite a unique 70s aesthetic which you can’t get new elsewhere, and the other alternatives are vintage / frail / expensive. AR on the inside only and playful red chronograph hands.

I would say the best value for a Sinn under $2k is the EZM3. In fact I would say it’s probably one of the best values in the secondarily market in general.

  • Tested based on European diving equipment standards and certified by DNV
  • Ar-Dehumidifying Technology enhances functional reliability and freedom from fogging
  • Magnetic Field Protection up to 100mT (=80,000 A/m)
  • Functionally reliable from –45 °C up to +80°C
  • Waterproof and pressure-resistant to 500 m diving depth (= 50 bar), certified by DNV
  • Low pressure resistant

12mm think and 47mm lug to lug make it an excellent daily watch.

But I’m a bit bias

I'll add the 856 in all its versions, I own the 856 S UTC. It's the definition of understatement for me, so much technology in such a subtle package.
It's hard to find it used these days and sometimes the prices are irrational, I managed to get it at a fair €1400.

My purely subjective opinion:

- My favourite would be the U1. Unique and iconic look. Solid watch.

- As was mentioned earlier, the EZM 3 is great value for money, and more versatile

- but the best, imho and since it apparently can be found <2k, would be the UX. Oil-filled HAQ. The only reason I prefer the U1 is the looks. A UX with the hands and dial of a U1 would be my dream watch.
