Casio F-91W - Post yours, stock or modded

Searching didn't uncover a clear dedicated "show yours off" Casio F-91W thread.

My regrets if I overlooked one-always the danger of falling in love anew with a neo-vintage watch, especially one this ubiquitous and well documented.

I also realize that the title of the thread may needlessly exclude the watch's cousins (e.g., Casio A158 and A168s, which I also enjoy). My regrets for any excessive narrowing.

But I've been smitten with my F-91WM-3ACF (the green one, on an 18mm Barton smoke gray nato) as my travel companion during some recent road tripping.

Thus, I thought I'd try to get the ball rolling on a thread dedicated to all of our pics of these little joys-bone stock, strap changes, and more involved mods alike.

So as not to belabor this first post with too much justification and preemptive apologizing, below is some scenery that my little buddy has seen over the past two weeks.

I'll also note about this one-I did a slight functional mod to it (beyond just the nato swap). I unscrewed the case back and put a little piece of Scotch tape over the metal contact to silence the button push sound (although with the tradeoff of now having no alarm sound).

And now on to you.

Show off your "beloved, mini, too small, fun, hipster, 'did you hear it has been used for nefarious purposes?,' digital, oldie, fifth one, beater, throwaway, GADA, 'it's so cheap I'll take my chances' water resistance" Casio F-91Ws :)

While the thread has been slow to pick up traction, just an FYI that there’s lots of cool shots of f91ws and mods on Instagram at #casiof91w.

I want to mod one. A blacked out version. Would it work with nail polish remover or would that ruin it?

Want it to look like this[/ATTACH type="full"]15941448[/ATTACH]
Cool minimalist look [emoji41]

Not sure about other ways to accomplish the look, but an aftermarket black face plate is available for purchase with installation guide:

For a premium from the same seller, one could also buy with the black face plate and positive or negative display already installed:

Not the best pics, sorry. I really should upgrade my phone, or get a proper camera. Or upgrade my lighting.

I had a much-loved Citizen Eco-Drive Tough, which was broken beyond repair.

I now have a Casio F-91W with a titanium body and sapphire crystal, which is waterproof to 200 metres.[/ATTACH type="full"]16257573[/ATTACH]
Super cool [emoji119]

What all went into that mod?

New quirky mod diary: swap with an SKMEI 2018 module from AliExpress, for better illumination 👌

Image

Image

No comments on the quality of the SKMEI: I just sourced it for the module, and for $10 or whatever, I don’t really care 🤷🏻‍♂️

Image

I saw a helpful YouTube video explaining this fairly straightforward mod.

Tools for the job.

Image

Some things to note based on my experience during the mod.

(1) After unscrewing the case backs, and lifting out the gasket for the Casio (such isn't necessary for the SKMEI), the Casio module can be pulled out by the raised tab, whereas the SKMEI can be pried out from the side.

Image

Image

(2) I removed (via unscrewing) the battery-holding tab from the SKMEI module; IDK if this was necessary nor whether it’ll entail any consequences I haven’t yet encountered.

Image

(3) The SKMEI module is a tight squeeze into the Casio case. You need to carefully press the Casio case buttons as far out as possible before trying to press the SKMEI module in, and you may need to warp (or unwrap) the SKMEI module-holding tabs near the buttons so that there remains a slight gap for the bottoms to engage and disengage from the module contact points. Be careful if you need to warp/unwarp those tabs slightly, as I ended up slipping with the tweezers while pressing hard, resulting in a little scratch on the underside of the case.

Image

Image

Also just to show it, I had previously modded the Casio to have no beeping sound (you just put a piece of Scotch tape over the contact point on the inside of the case back.

Image

And if you've never swapped the strap on an F-91 before, all you need is a spring bar tool.

One more completed shot:

Now the only question is, would it being gilding the lily to green-color mod the LCD?

I've been thinking about doing this swap myself, but I've been reading lots of contradicting info on the accuracy of the SKMEI modules.
I just might buy one or two, sync them with my PC and then put them in a drawer for a month. Worst-case scenario, I'll donate them to goodwill or similar.

Anyway ...

This one was on page 1 already, but I've since done a bit more to it because I wasn't really happy with the black bracelet.

  • Dual red LED conversion by 91mods (link to his Etsy store)
  • Display from A168WEM-1EF. Note the position of the day indicator. On the A168 displays it is closer to the date than on most other displays that are compatile with this module.
  • ZipNFC 'Tiny' programmable NFC sticker on the back of the display.
  • Crystal by Techsas. I'd link his store, but apparently he's been inactive since december. His YT channel also appears to have no uploads in the past 10 months.
  • 18-22mm adapters with quickrelease, also from Etsy (link)
  • Haglund's 22mm NATO strap, converted to single-pass.

Here's mine on a two-piece NATO from Clockwork Synergy. I mostly wear it to the gym and for chores in and around the house, but occasionally I'll throw it on for the day. But I always have a bit of an existential crisis when I wear it, because I enjoy it as much (if not more) than some of my other watches. Not bad for a watch and strap combo that didn't even clear $25.

Word. I’ve heard those comments re: SKMEI accuracy, but I’m the furthest thing from an accuracy junkie.

That said, the “finishing” ([emoji854]) of the SKMEI is definitely of lower quality than Casio’s. So if not for the illumination, I wouldn’t recommend one over a Casio.

But for $10ish, ya, no harm in playing around with them.

Great looking tweaks; thanks also for sharing the deets [emoji119]

Aftermarket crystals and quick-release adapters I may well need to look into!

Looks like Techsas is active again, but only taking larger orders (at least 10 pieces). His store doesn't list any items right now, so you'll need to browse his reviews to see what he has to offer and then contact him to get prices.
To give any indication, last summer I paid €16.47 (and shipping) for 3 crystals. That's €5.49 ($5.99 US at today's rate) a piece. Not sure how much they are now. He's in the UK, so I think his actual prices are in GBP.

I have 2 in use and one spare. I'm wondering if I should order a couple more, in case he disappears completely. Not sure about buying 10 though.

Last night I also noticed that JaysAndKays now have 18mm -> 20mm adapters for the F-91W, with or without 2-piece nylon straps.
Image

Seeing as I am very happy with their AE1200 adapters, I immediately bought a couple of sets to replace the ones I linked before. Those were okay, but these will almost certainly fit the F-91W better, both in terms of looks and the actual fit to the housing.

I'll post some side-by-side pics when mine arrive in a week or two (unless Customs decides that I should fill in 48762 forms and then wait another month while they make sure that these aren't really narcotics  ).

I was aimlessly rummaging through my spares box last night, and somehow ended up with all the parts and the inspiration to create this :
Image

F-91W-1YER
Crystal by Techsas
Vintage Seiko bracelet (IIRC from the 1970s)
Chrome display (I peeled off the LCD backplate and replaced it with a piece of mirror sticker)

The display mod seems to have negatively affected the backlight though. It went from "pretty useless" to "pushing the button won't make any difference whatsoever"
Oh, and the mod doesn't work on all displays. I put another piece of the same sticker behind the LCD of my A1000D, and the digits are now so faded that it's really hard to read that one. So try it at your own risk.

My current F-91W mod was quite simple - take off the old strap, put on a two-piece NATO using regular spring bars (scroll up to see the picture). I was wondering about the feasibility of putting an F-91W on a MN-style strap? I'm a fan of The Watch Steward Minimalist series. Would curved spring bars be better for this? Seems like it would eliminate any of the shaving of the lugs that is often recommended.

I never heard of shaving the lugs, then again I never looked into using straps on the stock housing and went straight to adapters.
Image

While there is some plastic (0.8mm according to my calipers) that could be removed from the housing itself, you will be dealing with the backplate pretty soon.

Or are you suggesting removing the part of the housing that covers the spring bars from the top? That would certainly be an interesting mod, although I am kinda worried about the structural integrity if you'd do that.
Image

Either way, putting spring bars (even thin ones) on these housings will only make things more difficult. Even if the bars are curved, you will still run into clearance issues on the edges of the strap. I'd suggest sticking with the original non-spring bars.

Speaking of adpaters ...

I'm still waiting. Tracking shows they cleared Customs this morning. The postal service will probably pick them up tonight or tomorrow morning, so I might receive them on Friday.
To my surprise it wasn't Belgian Customs that took ages, clearing them in about 24h. It was the International Service Center in LA that held on to them for over 10 days.

Welp, double post time ...

As I mentioned earlier, I ordered some JaysAndKays adapters as soon as I found out they make some specifically for the F-91W. Here's the 3 versions I bought :
Image

That's all the hardware options. 2-piece straps with silver hardware, with black hardware, and just the adapters without straps. The straps are available in several other colors, but I prefer black.
The straps are very thin, but then again that suits the watch just fine.

These don't come with quick-release springbars to connect to the watch itself, like their adapters for other models tend to do. Instead they require you to re-use the F-91W's original non-spring bar.
I tried inserting an 18x1.5mm bar, but that simply didn't want to go into the adapter. So these will only fit the F-91W.

The lug-to-lug becomes 47mm once you put these on. Lug width goes from 18mm to 20mm.
Oddly enough, I received different lengths on top as well as bottom, even though I could only specify the strap and hardware colors.

Here's some pics with the watches on my 17cm (6.7") wrist.

On a dual pass (Haglund's Essentials) NATO strap. I plan to use a single pass instead to lower the profile.

IMO the adapters are certainly worth the $12-ish. They're a much better fit than the generic ones I was using before. As for their straps, time will tell.

This is not a sponsored post. I am not affiliated with JaysAndKays. I bought these with my own money.

If my f91w wasn’t green, I’d be all over a set of these [emoji28]

Word. I figure I'll grab a set at some point just to have them, either to run them on the greenie for the hell of it, or just to file away in case I end up picking up another one in black again at some point down the road.

Thanks for the heads up re: just grabbing the adapters vs. the adapters + their 2-piece nato.

Glad to hear you were able to soft-of sort one strap via some quick modding. But ya, I'd personally probably just try anew with an aftermarket two-piece nato, or an RAF.
