Casioak : are you still in love ?

2 to 3 years ago, Casioak were a must-have to be trendy and glamorous :p . Last year Solar + BT Casioak seemed to be on a roll, and I have to admit that I did hesitate to buy one of them.....and I wonder if I'm going to buy one of them before summer.

What's your opinion on these watches ? For those of you who have already purchased one of these watches did you keep it or sell it because it's not fashionable anymore (at least less than the newer GShock model ?).

Should I know something before buying one (maybe 2nd hand, I would not mind) ? Are there any issues with the plastic strap (I had a low-end MRW200 which required a new plastic band after 18 months....Are the GShock straps more reliable ?).

If I go for the cheaper version (not solar), I wonder if there are fake models : I can see on the web some watches more expensive (and different) from what I can find on Amazon or Casio..
For instance this one seems to be difficult to find (at a price near 130€....same as the Solar+Bluetooth ): is it a legit Casio watch ?

There is another one with a beige bracelet and bezel (I don't have any picture for that one), hard to buy as well....I was wondering if it was a modded watch or a genuine Gshock...

Your input on solar/not solar Casioak is highly appreciated.......or your watch if you want my address :p

Thanks

The one in your picture is from the Blue and White Pottery series. Very nice. And still in stock on the UK G-Shock site. If you're ever in doubt about something being a mod or not, use Shockbase to check.

As for the main question, not sure how to answer. I got the grey one because it's nice. Still think it's nice. Haven't added any others to the collection. Trendy and glamourous doesn't come into it - you can see my contributions to WRUW for proof of that!

I own well over 100 Casios at this point, but I've never bought one of these. I was tempted for a hot minute with the metal ones last year, but got over it quickly.

I don't have a (good) answer as to why not. Probably because I see 20 a day on here. I also find the "Casioak" nickname obnoxious, I don't like thinking how it implies I bought the watch because I wanted or wanted to buy a Royal Oak (and there are other Casios that actually look closer to the RO).

They're nice watches, though, I understand why they are popular.

I have this one (pic is bummed off the interwebs) and it is just, well, meeh. It is not as legible as I prefer and the digital features are complicated to set while being unnecessary for me. I bought it to save the beating from yard work and construction remodeling on my mechanical watches, but then found a Bertucci for that role which I enjoy much more. It is certainly light, indestructible, slim, and comfortable to wear.

I own two, a metal bezel and a yellow BT. The Yellow is a great summertime beach and picnic watch because it's so light, so bright, and comfy. That said, I don't see the reason to purchase any more. I'm not a person who's interested in color variations or fashion collabs and Casio has not given me any further reasons to buy more.

I would add that I'm not part of the main demographic market for the 2100 so I'm neither surprised nor disappointed. It's just overall a "meh" for me.

Very interesting answers and thank you @Babylon Timer for this link that allowed me to find this afternoon this iteration of Casio, I first saw a year ago and that finally....I don't like that much (and it's fortunate because it's difficult to find this one too..)

Positive display on the LCD is easier to read (although I'm surprised to see how legible the GShock CBD 200 seems to have a very good negative display...) but it's not the same watch.

Anyway, it seems that the "meh" as an advantage over the "nice watch" here.

Are the beeps loud enough to wake you up on this watch or would you rather trust a full digital watch (such as the CBD 200) ?

I made the poor mistake of buying into the hype and jumped when I saw a all red one was available in a store in Mexico while on vacation. I would have preferred the black and white variant as that is more practical but the all red Casioak has become my designated vacation watch.

However they just released this in all gold which I think is absolutely fire

I'm not enamored by mine, but I like it enough to keep it in the collection - Mine was a Blush Pink one I won in a giveaway by Jenni Elle.

It does it's job solidly, but I'm not concerned with collecting more or upgrading to a newer one with more than the base features.

My GA-B2100 is in regular rotation, on an MN strap with adapters from Jaysandkays because I don't get on well with resin straps. It's not my favorite G-Shock (that would be the classic square 5610), but it makes a nice change when I'm in the mood for something analog.

Owner here, guessing 3ish years? Maybe 4? Unsure. Acquired a black one not terribly long after release.

Still wear it, still enjoy it.

Pros:
  • Very affordable
  • Light and thin for a G imo
  • Can be very legible depending on color combo
  • Durability has proven itself for me
  • I personally like the design and size, though I do not use the name "Casioak" to describe it. Feels silly to me

Cons:
-Even for a G it feels a bit "cheap"
-Materials such as the strap resin, thin plastic lens, limited functionality...just feel like less
-Shorter strap than I was use to on G's
-Low light legibility is pretty miserable
