Charge for an extra link

I recently bought a new Sub LV. I had shopped for months and tried on many watches from the same AD (in several different stores). At times, I noticed that the bracelet size was off to which the response was always "no problem, we can fix that."

The watch I bought proved to be too tight, although I had to have in on my wrist for a few hours before realizing that. I took it to the service center where adjustments were made but it was still too tight so they added another link. They charged me the equivalent of $70 for the extra link. I don't care about the money but this struck me as being a little cheap. I told the guy in the service center that the sales clerk should have sized the bracelet and known an extra link was needed and that at which point I would have insisted on this being added free of charge before purchase. He insisted that this would not have mattered and that they always have to charge for an extra link (I think this is a flat out lie).

Should I have been charged for the extra link one week after purchase?

You are absolutely correct. Everyone should be aware of the link count on bracelets for certain Rolex models before buying. I know of an Auth Rolex Jeweler that swapped a clasp for a customer between two different models right in front of my face. If you bought a Sub LV with less than 12 links they have to make you whole!!!!

End of discussion. I am personally known by Rolex USA (I am not a jeweler, just a big collector and they only service my watches!)so if you want to PM me I will make a call for you.

Cheers

How come you didn't take it back to the AD?

I did, just not the same store where a bought it. The AD has four stores one of which has the service center upstairs. I went directly to the service center not knowing I would need a new link.
Well at that point I would have got them to ring the store at which the watch was purchased, I would have thought they should have given you one for free for the hassle.

I think if an extra link is needed due to sizing it should be included at the time of purchase. Guess it depends on the AD.

I walked in to the Beverly Hills Rolex Service Center when they were still open and bought quite a few links for various watches. They were almost always around $40 if I recall correctly. One of the biggest pains was that they would not sell just the link, so I always had to take whatever watches I wanted sized with me.

I have needed extra links in my rolex's, I have a 9in wrist. Anytime a dealer makes adjustments for people in the backroom and the customer does not ask for their extra links back they keep them and resell them. If you are buying an expensive watch they should make it fit right and not charge you. Thast what they have always done for me.

9 inch wrists! Wow! Now that's big. I glad they fitted the watch for free for you.

20 years ago I pulled the trigger on a SS Sub. After the fact, I had to pay for an extra link. I think it was about $50-75. It chapped my hide. 10 years ago I did the same with a TT. That was a couple of hundred. I remember being really upset and disappointed when it happened (the first time).
Did you buy new or used? If you're buying used it is always good to ask about the number of links or if they had any removed.

How many links did you have to begin with?

Yes, I absolutely agree.

I think it's 9 links + 1 flat link (marked "S") on the 12 side and 4½ link on the 6 side.

Some games you just play. The luxury watch game is like reading the Hilton Hotel dinner bill and asking them what the charges are. Hilton does not have an extra value menu.

I purchased a watch this week. Mall watch, nothing fancy. I said to the clerk, you bastardize another watch to get a link and I am in. 6'7" tall, 11" wrists. The watch I picked only needed one extra link.

Now if I had not said that and he charged me for the link, that would have been my fault as I did not negotiate that into the deal.

Now if I had purchased your watch, and I went into get the watch with 5 or more extra links, you think that should be free also?

Let the dealer know up front what you want and then let him/her decide if they want the deal that makes you both happy. Not fair getting one deal and then expecting more thrown in the original deal.

Entitlement is on the way out in 2010!
