Except from the email I received, sent to private sellers:

Dear Chrono24 User,

We've expanded our Terms and Conditions, so that sellers like you can take advantage of our new certification service.

Beginning April 29, 2024, buyers can book certification of their new watch at the time of purchase. This is free of charge for you as a seller.

The certification process works like this: You send your watch to a watchmaker of our choosing, free of charge. They will inspect the watch to verify its condition, then send it directly to the buyer via insured shipping.

This adds a layer of potential problems in my experience. Cheap watchmakers are much more likely to damage a watch. You also have at least one additional packaging, transit, and delivery process that could go sideways. Sorry, with their 7 day inspection by the buyer policy already in place why do this? If you do go the inspection route does that eliminate the 7 day inspection time allowed by Chrono24 now by the buyer? If not, what purpose does this additional step serve?

Eh, I'm not so sure. Ive bought several watches there and on the more expensive models (depending on price of course), I might have been willing to shell out for an independent reviewer.

I bought from private sellers. They never offer returns. If I could've had a third party validate one particular "very good quality" piece, they'd have undoubtedly said it was "fair" at best, based on the chrono24 quality definitions.

Of course, whether or not that's how it'd play out in reality is another matter entirely.

Actually, buying from a private seller gives you 7 days to decide if there is a material issue with the watch, before the funds are released to the private seller. The private seller isn’t obligated to do anything, though I guess if the buyer can substantiate an egregious breach of the terms of sale perhaps they could hold onto the seller’s funds until some agreement was reached.

With a commercial seller, there is an explicit “14 day money back” offer if the watch is not as described. I have bought & sold a number of watches on C24 and have never had an issue, but I first “buy the seller” and myself have been on the other side of that equation as a seller.

I think this is beneficial if I was selling a watch. Give buyers more piece of mind. As a buyer, depending on the watch, I don’t think I could always get a watch authenticated in 7 days and I live in a major metropolitan area. For those of those that don’t, this adds even more value.
