Confused between a Tag Heuer and a Hamilton

Hello guys,

My technical knowledge about watches is almost non existent so pardon any goof ups on my part. I love watches and have been particularly fond of Seikos, owning two of them ( Automatic and Quartz) For running I have my Garmin Fenix 2.

Its that time in my life when my business has started going north and I'm considering buying myself an entry level luxury brand. The main reason it being a social statement. $ 1400 would be my max budget.

My first choice was a really basic Tag Heuer, Formula 1 ( quartz/Automatic) but somehow the choices available in Tag at this price point are not to my liking and the purchase would be purely for social reasons. Then I came across Hamiltons ( fascinated by them since i saw it in Interstellar) Now hamilton has a good amount of variety in Automatics in this price range. Im actually being spoilt for choice and amongst quite a few other in Hamilton, I have shortlisted the Railroad Skeleton which is roughly for $1250.

Now my only concern is whether Hamilton can match upto a Tag Heuer when it comes to snob value for watches in the same price range ???

Thanks,
N

Snob value: I think of Hamilton more as a competitor to Tissot than to Tag. They're all good watches, but I do think the price is higher for a reason. I can't argue with your logic, though - don't buy a Tag for the logo if you're not that keen on the watch.

Nothing wrong with a F1. Of course, only consider buying one if you like it. But the "new" F1 in the Autavia style case is very nice IMHO. I agree with imagwai. If you like the watch, then no problem. If you have doubts, don't buy it.

If you don't buy the one you "want" you'll just regret it later. Love the watch! They're both entry level with TAG sitting ever so slightly higher. If you want snob value... Which you should not then TAG is Swiss to the core where Hamilton was US then bought out by Swatch.
Grey Market and second hand will get you a level above what you're looking at now as well.

Hammy's are nice. I've always looked at them as great value for the money. They are undecorated Swiss movements with no modification. They are nice looking watches, and they offer a very diverse collection.

That said, I feel Tag is better. IMHO there is more thought in a Tag Heuer design inside and out. If you know Tag, then if someone is wearing one, you'll pretty easily be able to spot one out before a Hamilton. But I think marketing plays a large role on that.

Tag releases are moving more upscale, the F1's are using more steel, the AR's are going ceramic, and the Carerra's are diversifying more. The Link is a few years old but they have really refined the look to sporty and dressy, I love mine.

The first one you need to impress is yourself. What do YOU like? I'm in sales, and I wear watches out of superstition lol. I wouldn't wear my Frogman when I'm meeting with the owner of a company pitching a million dollar project, but I would wear my Tag or Omega because they are my "good luck" watches. Silly I know, but it works for me, and I also know I haven't lost a sale for wearing my Apple Watch.

I work as a graphic designer and have made 7 figure sales pitches wearing my old TAGHeuer orginal F1, as well as Explorer II, or the Breitling avenger II gmt or Omega seamaster.

Out of all these different options I really don’t think either of them have made or broke the sale. It could be about confidence when wearing brand A, B or C. but I think that most of the time its more about what you are “selling” sure you may be selling “yourself”, but I have noticed clients more so observing my work and not the watch Im wearing at the time

You know, you should realise that most people, I'd say about 90%, don't give a rat's behind about watches. And if you're good at what you do, then you really won't need a fancy label watch to make a business deal. Then, TAG Heuer's not for everybody. TH fans appreciate the brand history, the iconic designs, good quality and semi reasonable price.;-) But if you wanna impress (other) watch snobs and play it safe, you should go for an Omega or Rolex. Everybody likes those. But well, I don't know, there's just something about TAG Heuer; maybe it's an aquired taste. But once you learn to appreciate that TH taste, you're hooked! Good luck finding your perfect snob watch!:-d

I've been in your shoes. And understand what everyone says about your work being more important, nobody looks at your watch, you can wear a G Shock selling multimillion dollar contracts, etc... And for the most part I agree. However, IMO, if having the right watch enhances your confidence then I say go for it. There is no way it could hurt you and in the end you will also have a beautiful piece to enjoy.

Of the two brands, Tag is hands down the more prestigious. Another thing to consider though is whether you need to buy new. There are a lot of very nice pre-owned Tag's at your price point. From very reputable sources. Buy the right seller and you can get a lot more watch for the same coin.

Good luck in your search.

I own one of each, both are excellent. I honestly get more compliments on my 46mm khaki pilot than my Carrera 😕

The tag is a higher placed brand in general but i am not a fan of pitching brands against each other. My main reasoning is that alot of brands have a wide range of watches that cover a wide range of prices.

You cant compare a 2800 dollar omega to a 6000 dollar tag grand carrera. The tag is a better watch though omega the better brand.

Could you post pictures of the exact two watches you ate considering?

A very important point many have brought up is that you should get what you want. If you let "what ppl think" or "this one is a bit cheaper" dictate you will just end up either selling it to finance what u really wanted or buying the 2nd one as well.

Both are good brands. I was in your boat not long ago. I wanted a prestigious brand as my first luxury watch. I was looking to spend no more than $1,500. I decided on Tag because I felt they are just under Rolex and Omega, but more affordable, yet a decent jump over many other brands you could buy at a chain store. I was not feeling the F1 series though and I did not want to buy it just to say I had a Tag. I started looking into the Aquaracer and really fell for it. I jumped on it and could not be happier. So as others have said, do not settle for the watch you do not want just to enter the brand. On that note, I love the lower level Aquaracers and Carreras. My next watch from Tag would be the WAR201E, the blue faced Day-Date if I had the funds for it. I really love that watch.
