Do you need a seconds hand?

Mechanical watches without seconds hand can look super clean and minimalistic. However, I always get stressed out over the fact that I need to know if a watch is actually running (particularly when I haven’t worn a watch for a day or so). So unless I can see something else moving (e.g. via see-thru case back or open heart movement) I don’t feel quiet at ease to trust that the watch is showing the accurate time.

I am contemplating buying an older JLC Reverso model, just not sure if I will get used to not having the seconds hand or if it will drive me nuts. Doing the good-ol’ “sound check” seems somewhat cumbersome to me, but maybe it’s a matter of getting used to it

Any thoughts? Do you need the second hand?

Nope. Not a consideration for me at all!

Nope. The two watches I wear the most don't have running seconds hands.

Sometimes yes and sometimes no. Depends on the watch. This is why we can have all kinds, and should have variety.

No, I don't need a seconds hand. My rotation of four includes a G-Shock that I don't check the LCD screen on all the time, and a Zenith chrono with running seconds that I don't look at.

Admittedly, the central seconds hand is a crutch on the watches that have them. I don't do anything with them, ever, except check to make sure the watch is running before I put it on (I once put a manual wind on a few moments after it had stopped, only to find that out later). I'll probably get a dress watch with only an hour and minute hand one day, maybe wean myself off checking for function. I should trust the watches.

For quartz, it's a must to not have a seconds hand (9F aside). For mechanical, no preference either way. The "sign of life" thing with any aspect of a mechanical watch is just plain goofy. Shake your wrist or twist the crown real quick. Neither is hard to do.
