Doing a second collaboration with William Shatner

Hi Everyone,

Ilan here from Egard. I am doing a new collab with William Shatner (if you all haven't seen the original Passages). This one is in celebration of the Webb Telescope and his recent outing in to space :)

This isn't a promotional post at all. We aren't launching anytime soon and when we do I will be sure to support the forum and make some promotional posts but I just wanted to share the design. We got approval from NASA to use their logo which is super cool.

Anyway I figured i could start a thread and answer any questions about William Shatner's love of watches and the design process (this was entirely his vision) as well give insight in to what it might look like. Hope you all find it interesting. Feedback is appreciated as well. It's a different design for sure so i know it will be polarizing but it's 100 percent what he wanted so in that sense i feel (once built) it will be a great accomplishment. I quite like it. The timekeeping on it is different than regular watches as i used multiple metal disks layered on top of each other.

I am still trying to figure out how to make that space strap that he wants so bad lol :) Maybe a rubber mold in the end.

Looking forward to a good convo!

I'm sure there will be people who are super into it, but I guess honestly, I'm just not sure why the design is so literal. There were so many cool colors and elements from the telescope that could have been used subtly, specifically the yellow and honeycomb pattern, to create a watch that was inspired by the telescope rather than just be an rendered image OF the telescope. Maybe it's just not my taste, but the project and collaboration is a cool mash up.

I own your first collaboration watch with willam shatner. My wife loves wearing it as she’s a Star Trek fan, as am I.
This watch pictured would be a no go for me. For all of the wonders the Webb telescope will discover and refine, the image on the dial is a bland choice. It does not translate in my brain to the wonders of space or exploration!
I wish you good luck!

Appreciate the feedback! Perhaps more of the universe on the dial? He very much wants the Webb on it as the second hand.

Overall I like it. One element I would delete is the moon (I think that's the moon) on the crown. Sometimes less is more and that screams "cheese" to me while the rest of the watch seems much more well thought out. Same with the moon print on the strap. For my tastes, it's too much and is "trying too hard." Why take such a clean design and throw that mess on it? It's like putting a bumper sticker on a BMW M8. It took me a second to pick up the hour and minute hand marking, but now I love the minimalism that of it. Will the satellite be a three dimensional part, or will it be printed on? It's hard to tell from the rendering. I don't dislike that portion as much as some other members have stated actually. The watch is supposed to commemorate the satellite so it makes sense that it is a stand out feature.

Interestingly enough in the prototype i just build the earth piece is not on the crown so that was a debatable element.

The moon strap is an item that comes with it for free and he really wants it lol... I am struggling with how to make it but he's very serious about it.

The Telescope is on a metal plate that is printed so it won't have depth really as the watch is very thin. It's the highest quality method we could do it. It looks interesting in person. There is a bit of a sheer to it (i am unsure how to explain it)

I am offering guidance but we really wanted this to be something he was proud of and connected to what he wants to put out. In person the piece actually feels very nice. The case etc.. and even the dial work itself is quite nice. Aesthetics is entirely subjective and the market is his following and NASA enthusiasts so we are going with it so long as it makes sense from a functional standpoint.

We kind of have a reputation for making "different" looking watches like the Quantus and Phase 2 etc...

Love the case back on this. The strap is also unique and very well done. I agree with the other user though who mentioned the moon crown being kind of cheesy. It overcrowds the design. Also I'm not a fan of the telescope on the dial. I would like to see more outer space there. Look at what Grand Seiko and Citizen does with their textured dials. The recent release of the Citizen NB1060 comes to mind... Maybe the goal should be to create a dial texture that conveys the wonder and beauty of the universe.

Also just want to say that I really love what you and your company stand for. Your videos always have a way of touching the heart and making a point. Keep up the great work.

Thank you for watching our videos!!! makes me very happy when we get positive feedback on those.

I don't disagree at all. The prototype we have now doesn;t have the crown and uses a standard Egard sword logo.

The telescope on the dial seems to be a necessity for him as it was a point of disagreement originally between how i saw it and how he saw it. In the end of the day I promised him and myself I would create his vision and offer guidance and this is one aspect he seems firm on.

I will keep working on it though and see what i can improve.

good references btw for textured dials. Thank you

Interesting. I like it, and the collaboration-factor. Shatner is still pretty iconic. The strap is pretty cool. Seems like it would be tough to tell the time though, especially in low light. Not sure I would buy as on a watch diet, but interesting to see.

I think it would be neat to hear more about the process with Shatner. For example, are there hand drawn sketches on some of his ideas. Any funny stories during the process.

I have some wacky stories but probably hard to write. He's a really passionate guy and probably the most invested out of anyone i;ve worked with in terms of feedback and how much he cares about the piece.

I got a call one day about he had just watched a show about butterflies and how their wings hav the darkest color in nature... on par with Vanta black and how space felt the same and how that concept should be incorporated in to the watch. The story is a lot more funny when you imagine it in Shatner's voice lol I think going to space was a profound experience for him if i had to guess, although i can't imagine how it wouldn't be.

Working in manufacturing, I will give you credit that leading creative teams can be tough. You want to create an environment that fosters the creativity, but then have to balance that with manufacturing capabilities, budgets, timelines, and what the market wants. Mr. Shatner is obviously a very talented actor and was part of one of the most iconic programs to grace television, but that doesn't necessarily make him an excellent watch designer. I have never had the privilege of working with him, but I hope that he is receptive to what is meant by everyone has constructive feedback.

I actually really like the stacked disk design and believe I can picture what you are going for in my head. What I really like is the case design (shape and finishing), hour markers on the case, case back, and your idea for the rotating discs. It's a very minimalistic, yet elegant look. Were I get lost is the "souvenir shop" elements like the moon crown and strap. If it's a print on a rubber strap I think that will really cheapen what is otherwise a very tasteful design. I'm sending you a PM on an idea for how to manufacture the strap if the moon look is a must have.

Thank you for giving us the opportunity to give our feedback. I work in a different industry, but one with some overlap and a watch is something we have always wanted to do. This is fun.

I agree 100 percent with everything you said. I definitely do not want to cheapen the piece in any way shape or form which is why i have been struggling with the strap. The crown will most likely be a simpler Egard crown.

I do believe if we can get the strap right it will be quite unique (if it is an actual mold that has that texture).

Not my cup of tea, but I think it's a nice and ambitous design. Shatner doesn't mean much to me (not a Trekkie or SF fan and he was old before I was born) but I'm sure his fans would go for this. I would recommend making the hour and minutes "stars more defined and different though.

For the strap, you could always just do a print like children's watches or swatches. Doing a texture would likely cost a lot and make it more fragile.

I think the colors are great.

Not familiar with the original collaboration but i will certainly look it up, the one in this post looks really unique and cool to me. Not to over the top that i wouldn't wear it but still some unique characteristics...i love it, look forward to seeing the final product and a release date!!

I would suggest using one of the amazing web images for the dial background. You could even do a series with different dials. Such incredible colors.

If you must have the damn telescope literally on the watch consider this - make it smaller and at the end of the seconds hand. That way it travels through space. I think raketa made a sputnik watch with this effect, and i love it.

This is a cool idea too! I second this.
