Googling "Japanese quartz year 2020 problem" yielded this interesting find:

It suggests there are quartz "engines" that will stop showing correct years after 24, 25, 29, and possibly 30.

Basically that’s all the calendar it stores in memory. It’s tipped past 2019 and now gone back to 1980.

But other than the annoying date, the rest of the watch will keep functioning and displaying time like always, right?

IIRC, you can reuse the calendar. You just have to find the 4 year rotation. The year will obviously be wrong. Other than that it should work.

 

Set the year to 1992 and should be good to go.

Correct calendar repeats every 28 years.

 

Thanks, I set it to 1992, now the day of week is correct 01-02-2020 THURSDAY

But I think most of the time, I'll set the display as (not showing incorrect year)

after 28 years, in 2048, I'll have to set it to 1992 again, so I'll have correct day of week.
