it's a Rolex? It's happened so much that I just gave up and said yeah...sure...

even though it's completely its own thing...

To be fair Steinhart is pretty Rolex looking. It’s essentially an aesthetically identical case, bracelet and bezel as a Rolex. The differences are pretty subtle unless you’re an enthusiast. Different hands, chapter ring, date location? It’s clearly an homage that’s been adjusted a little to sorta be ‘it’s own thing’.

It’s a Rolex homage, so it’s natural that non WIS are gonna think it’s a Rolex 🤔

Never happened with my Panerai……yet 😂

+1 for never experiencing this even while wearing a Sub.

Given Steinhart (nothing against 'em, BTW) is known for their Rolex homages, I don't think it's a stretch that a non-WIS would confuse the two.

has more to do with the people asking the questions - i agree with the observation below that people who don't know watches may recognize a watch as a 'luxury' brand and assume the watch is one of the few brands they know - Rolex, Tag, Omega usually, in my experience. friend's spouse looked at a Certina watch I was wearing and asked if it's a Tag....

happens to me all the time regardless what im wearing... with a caveat.. has to be on bracelet.
If its not on bracelet... seems to look less Rolex-y. if it has a bezel on it... darned near 100%.
Peoples like shiny things i guess... nice bracelets are more ubiquitous now more than ever.
Its ok...

funny thing a mate mentioned another mate bought a new electric Tesla.. when he actually bought a Rivian. lol.

but wouldn't someone with one of those WANT people to think it's a Rolex? ;)
I'd like to think of it as "design on a budget" for some of the watches that Steinhart offers.

The ocean 39 vintage GMT is obviously inspired by the 1957 6542 GMT master, which is available, but not at a price that's even remotely realistic (chrono24 lists prices between 26k and 78k) and it's also practically unwearable due to the fragility of the bakelite bezel that has aged a lot.

It's also so dated in design that people will see it and think "that's an old grandfathers sock drawer find".
Besides that, it's fun to wear a smaller watch that looks fine and doesn't break the bank too much.

And the only watches that (as of yet) were not mistaken for Rolex were my G-Shocks.

Don't really care enough myself to be bothered. I get 'Is that a real watch?' (AKA, not a smartwatch/digital watch) more often than anything else, and on occasion, someone who takes/gets a closer look asks the follow-up, 'Is it expensive?'

Granted I DID get annoyed during my first marriage when my ex and her mother would call my Speedmaster the 'Rolex Omega'...
