So I occasionally dip in and out of the Orient forum, and there's some pretty exciting news about the Mako/Ray bubbling up at the moment. Thought you lot at F71 might be interested, since it's a forum favourite.

First up - there's a new Mako available without the day pusher, which some people really don't like. Personally it's never bothered me, but it's good news for those it did.

What's more exciting to me is that it has a new movement which hacks and hand-winds. And it's available already.

The blue Mako on sale here - there's video too: Orient FAA02002D AA02002D

And the black Mako, also with video: Orient FAA02001B AA02001B

Hopefully Orient does the same treatment to the Ray dial model soon. Sounds like it, if this is anything to go by.

And in other news, Yobokies is launching a new coin-edged bezel for the Mako/Ray. No details yet, but I posted about it over here.

This has seriously shaken up my watch plans for 2016...

Very nice! I'll stick with my 5 year old Mako for now, as the day pusher never bothered me and the movement is rock solid, but this looks a nice step up in quality. Sapphire crystal, too!

umm... i guess i'll be the first to be "that guy" I'm not in love with this.. I think it looks more like an invicta or other sub homages now.. and I don't care for that.

being left handed i don't care about the crown(s) because they aren't facing my wrist anyways... but unless I buy a sub..I don't want my divers to look like they are trying to be subs... my .02

Unfortunately it's priced like the Mako USA, but appears to have some of the upgrades.

I'd be curious to see if it has the Mako USA lume and 120 click bezel, since it already has the sapphire upgrade. Unfortunately it looks like the case lacks the drilled-through lugs and the bracelet has folded end links, so it may be halfway in-between in terms of feature set... except for the superior movement.

I've never had a problem with the Mako (original) lume in relation to the Ray. The Ray may edge it out very slightly, but it has larger applied lume areas. In any case, the Mako's top 5 in lume for me, and I few quite a few that are not shabby.

I'm also pleased that they did the black variant, as I only have the Mako in Pepsi. It's already really hard to not 'collect the whole family' and this gives me a distinctly different variant.

This is big news-- I'm hoping it's not just a modified 4R36, but a movement that's fully competitive with the 4R36 in <$200 watches puts Orient in a very good position.

Being part of the Epson side of the Seiko-Epson conglomerate, they have been known to use Seiko's quartz chronograph movements (since they're a brand that specializes in automatics but still wants to cater to quartz buyers.) I'm not familiar enough with their very few 3-hander quartz to say who makes those movements.

The day/date arrangement doesn't look like it's going to be a 4R36 variant. Don't get me wrong-- I like the 4R36, but I like the feel of Orient's current non-hacking movements as well. I like that they have distinct feel from one another and welcome the competition.

Always been a fan of the makos and had two of em. Curious about this new movement.

Hmmmmm.

I like the day pusher. Gives it a more distinct look. Now it just fades into what most other dive like watches look like.

I'll keep my Mako USA and Mako XL over these.

Yeah... This.

I like the looks of the current Mako and Ray, including the pusher. Although the addition of hacking and hand winding would have been nice. Along with a sapphire crystal. Other than that, I was pretty happy with the way they looked.

Hmm I kinda think the pusher needs to be there now I see it without!

Excellent! The day pusher alone always prevented me from buying one. Now with the addition of sapphire and hacking, as long the price is still sensible, I'll be adding a blue ray to the collection and no doubt.

Excuse the ignorance but isn't the bezel already coin edge? As opposed to scalloped like a monster, or I dunno, an invicta 8926 that isn't coin edged? Looks like it to me.

A coin edge is exactly that - like the edge of a coin, which is perpendicular to the face, with very little curve between. The Mako/Ray has a curved bezel edge, which flows on from the curved bezel insert. In my opinion that makes it a lot dressier, whereas a coin edge is a lot more toolish.

Also, the Mako/Ray does have a scalloped bezel - the scallops are just smaller than those on the Monster.

Here's a Murphy coin edge bezel on a Seiko SKX:

I have to say, I'm pretty disappointed it doesn't look like the new Mako has sapphire glass. Why they would introduce a major upgrade to the movement and arguably the case, but not upgrade the crystal, is beyond me.
