Fifty Fathoms date change question

Hi, I got my FF 5150 back from a full service at Blancpain and now the date periodically does not fully click over in the date window, but rather sits in limbo between the previous and current date.

I’ve spoken to Blancpain and they say it is a power reserve issue. They are happy to take the watch back for a look but suggested I “play with it” for a few weeks, by which they seem to mean keeping the power reserve cranked to the max. I followed their suggestions for winding up and setting the date and time. They recommended not keeping the watch on a winder.

Still hit or miss in terms of what I see in the date window each morning. If it is halfway between dates and I let it go for the day it stays that way; the following morning it may “reset” and be centered on the correct date or may again be between 2 dates. Seems random, although cranking it up seems to increase the odds of having a correctly centered date the next day.

So maybe I’m not charging it enough…? Blancpain said from a dead stop “wind it for 2 minutes.” That’s a ton of winding. I can’t imagine this thing isn’t charged up sufficiently to turn the date wheel, even with a 5-day power reserve. I’ve reset time and date a couple of different ways, and still get mixed results. It may correctly display the date for a few days, then not. I've tried different variations of daily winding/winding + put on winder at night.

Many parts were replaced during the service (pic). I asked if there was a problem and was told parts replacement was normal for a full service. I also got the "silicium" balance spring upgrade. No issues with the date changeover before the service, and I seem to hazily recall that the date previously transitioned over 24 hours as opposed to clicking over at midnight, which is does now.

Anyway, easy answer is to send it back but would like to avoid that (Blancpain is great but quite slow) if anyone has any insights or similar experiences.

Thank you!

Doesn't sound right to me... if the low PR (low torque) prevents the date wheel from completely snapped to the next date, it should stop the movement. It does sound very strange that the movement keeps going but the date is not completely snapped. My guess is that you will likely have to take it back to the Service Center to have them checked over. Might be just a very easy fix.

Which Service Center did you send you FF to, and did you go through an AD or directly drop it off at the SC? I'm planning to have my BP serviced, and wonder if I should physically drop it off at the West Coast service center (it's a one-hour drive for me, and not sure if it's worth it... but I feel safer this way than going through an AD).

Hi, I went through the NYC boutique. Sounded like there was a watch smith on site. Literally one watch smith on site. There was no talk of sending the watch to a service center from there, only delays in waiting for parts to arrive. Hope that helps!

While not in the same caliber of movements (pretty close for sure though), I had a Casio MRW-200 that did that. In fact that day/date set up in those seems prone to either the day or the date hanging half way through its travel.

Like I said, basically the level of finish and refinement.

If you never had this before, and since the service was performed this is happening, it sounds as if someone didn't put it back together correctly... Definitely send it back to be fixed for free..

This reminds me of when I had the front end bearings replaced on my Seat Cupra, the garage gave me back the car and it pulled heavily to the right, in other words the idiots did not correct the geometry after dismantling the front end. I call them and they tried to blame me saying "you must have driven into a curb". I had to argue with them to get them to fix it.

I had a similar issue on a brand new Omega Seamaster SMP300 right out of the box. I also thought perhaps it was a power reserve issue, or maybe just a sticky spot of lubrication, but after cycling the date wheel through a few times and ensuring full winds and all it continued to do the same thing. I swapped it out, as to me that was definitely not acceptable at any price point to say nothing of $5k for an Omega or much more for a Blancpain.

If it were me, I'd cycle the date wheel a few times, ensure full charges, and see if that did the trick. If not, I'd take it back. And even if it would only work properly on a full charge, I'd still take it back.

We should expect even an inexpensive department store watch to have a working date function. Higher end watches should really ensure QC on this kind of thing imho.

Good luck, and in any case congrats on an amazing watch! Exactly that Blancpain on a bracelet like you've got it is on my long-term grail list. Hope it works out well for you!

I had the same problem, even took it back for servicing within warranty. Still happened occasionally, but I was somehow too lazy to go through the whole procedure again, so whenever the date wheel got stuck I just tapped hard the crystal with my knuckle to get it to flip through. You could try this too (and also that I don’t feel alone in this haha).

In the end, I really do think that in this movement if the power reserve is not high enough, the date wheel has a higher chance of not clicking over. The problem went away when I wore it every day. Perhaps the date change mechanism also needs time to break in.

Even if the date change over isn't instant at midnight, you would have thought it would complete within a few hours. Does it change over if you advance the time through midnight manually? What about if you reset the date by a few day, in case there is a glitch? Set the time to 11:30 and just see what happens.

Sent it back to the NYC boutique who sent it to to the NA service center. Quick turnaround around, good as new now.

Someone earlier in this thread (forget who, apologies) noted to be wary of boutique vs service center work, so that was def a good call out.

I know this is an old post but it just blows my mind that they would say this.

Either they are full of crap, or they make embarrassingly bad movements that need high power reserve to do a date change.
