How Cartier turns custom watch dreams into reality

I discovered this article recently and visited the Cartier boutique in LV and HQ in NYC to inquire.

While the article describes a wonderful program that seemed to be available for the asking, my inquiry was met with unknowledgable sales people, and when I met with managers, they ultimately admitted this program was only available to Cartier's biggest customers.

Disapointing.

In any case, if you could order a customized Cartier, what would it be?

For me, it would be based on the current Tank Louis (WGTA001), which is a large-sized, manual-wind, time-only Tank.

My customizations would be a full guilloche dial in white with either a platinum or yellow gold case with matching deployant clasp.

If they made it in platinum for me, I would want the crown to have a ruby jewel rather than the blue sapphire.

Fun to fantasize about...the Tank Louis is the only Cartier watch I like (maybe the Tank Americaine) so it may be awhile before I become a whale at the Maison!

I'm not sure you really have to be so much a whale, as have a good relationship with your SA and some level of buying history. I'm not a whale, but I have a good relationship with my SA, and that's what she emphasized was more important than being "A whale." She has talked to me a few times about doing something custom, as she has done some for other clients. She said the main drawback is that now there is about 2 year wait.

I asked about this program at three different Cartier boutiques.

LV didn't know about it and after checking told me it was unavailable.

The Boutique on Greene Street in NYC had not heard of it and never got back to me after leaving my contact info.

The HQ on 5th Avenue in NYC put me in touch with a sales associate who had experience with the program and he submitted my interest to Paris. Waiting to hear.

I think this is not as easy as it was when the article first came out, however, if I can get a mechanical Tank Louis with a full guilloche white dial/matching deployant buckle in platinum (w/Ruby crown) or yellow gold, I would be really happy.

I wonder, if the WGTA0011 (manual wind/large Tank Louis) is listed on the Cartier website for $13K, what premium is charged for a customized (full guilloche) dial? or to have a platinum case? Or both?

I will report back if I hear from HQ....in the meantime, what would be guesses for the prices of these customized upgrades?
