How is Oris as a brand? Is big crown pointer date worth buying?

Oris is what I (and others I suppose) call a “Forum Darling.” Not that the masses are correct simply by their numbers, but you’ll read far more praise here for the brand than criticism.
So I am predicting you’ll get responses mostly in support of the brand. I have never owned one, nor do I anticipate it (personal preference for other makers). But so many fans can’t be wrong, right?

I love mine. It’s on older model, but it’s my favorite of theirs.
I visited an Oris store while in France a month ago and was treated very well. They had a large inventory and were happy to let me look at anything I wanted.
I think they’re well made and have very cool designs.

That Propilot with the altimeter is so cool. I like it when watches can do weird extra functions like that. It does not bother me in the slightest that I would never meaningfully use the altimeter. I'd just enjoy watching it change as I hiked, flew, and drove.
Oris also makes a diver with a depth gauge deal on it. Also very cool. Again, not worried that I only ever swim about 4 feet under the surface.

I don’t know about the forum darling bit, but they do make some nice watches.

I have the ox blood pointer date and you can lose yourself staring into that color. Good overall quality. I bought mine used in very good condition for what I’d guess is half what it cost new. Meaning take a look at used first. There are quite a few floating around out there.

Yeah the "forum darling" is a bit of a stretch. They are generally liked around here sure, but I think that's more to do with them just generally being pretty good watches, if perhaps a bit overpriced for what you're getting (an elabore grade SW200 with a red rotor on it).

You're not going to find them in everyone's collection, nor will you inevitably have someone suggest one as you would with Sinn, Tudor, and Nomos - those are real forum darlings.

The BCPD is fairly unique in its price range, and if you like the style, go for it. Do be aware though that yeah, Oris resale is typically 50%.

Im getting a 25% discount on Oris from my AD. I was thinking of buying a spb143 before, but i backed out after i read about the bezel misalignment and inaccuracy. I thought the 6r35 movement wasnt worth 1200 dollars. I think the same movement is used in the alpinist which is much cheaper.(the compass in it also has a problem with alignment). I dont have any swiss made watch in my collection. I own Casio, Seiko and Citizen.

Any watch you really like is "worth buying'

I like Oris's big crown pointer date.

IMHO, it might be the only Oris watch worth buying today.

I’ve owned a couple. Solid, well made watches.

Could be both, albeit I found it more dressy.

I've never seen one in person, but I think they are very nice looking in photos. An Oris just might be my next watch. I really like the Big Crown Wings of Change with no date and small seconds, but it is a limited edition so I'll get something else when I'm ready.

I’m gonna go out on a limb and suggest watches from these retailers are likely to be authentic. Edit: not sure why the link says USA, it’s for Oris ADs in India.

I'm a fan, though not an owner. At some point that will change. I really like the bronzes and 65s. I would not hesitate to buy the brand.

Depending on the model you're looking at, you can get quite a big discount for their watches, especially the older models from AD.

The last time I visited an AD though, I was told that Oris was advising ADs to stop giving discounts at all and that they were going to increase the MSRP (which has already happened I believe). The model I was looking at last time.

I owned a pre-aquis diver small seconds and it was a great watch. I happen to like the styling of a lot of their watches. I think the interest in the brand around here has died down a bit over the years. They strike me as a brand that has a lot of fans when people ask about the brand specifically, but they are not frequently recommended (at least in the threads I read) when asking about a specific type of watch.

I can't give the OP a reason not to get an Oris.
