Incoming 124060 and observations

I had requested a 124060 from my SA at a Rolex Boutique about 4 months ago and I got “the call” (was an email actually) earlier this week, which was also on my wife’s birthday. She has been slowly warming up to the idea of wearing watches and to my surprise, she preferred the larger, sportier models. Given that the watch came in on her bday, I let her take the watch. It’s too big on her but it doesn’t look unreasonable. Most importantly she likes the look and feel. A big thank you to my SA and the boutique who made the entire experience fun and special for my wife’s first Rolex.

Some observations from a former 114060 owner:
-The 12 wears so much better (for my 16cm wrist). The lugs make a huge difference. Everything is more proportional and the watch is much flatter on the wrist. My wife prob could not pull off the previous gen.
-The AR coating is a big upgrade. The watch has a lot of black space and the AR coating works nicely here to enhance the black and make the indices pop.
-The clasp is chunkier for sure and I prefer the prior clasp. With the wider bracelet, this was prob unavoidable though.
-Tbh, I got bored of the 114060 after wearing it daily for years. I didn’t think I’d miss it after trading it in for a BLNR. But there’s just something about a ND Sub. It’s so simple, clean, and robust. It really is a wonderful watch and even more so in its current iteration.

Thanks and your observations are spot on from the SubDate I got. Especially the wider bracelet and the clasp is ridiculous.

And for reference- What size wrist do you have…it looks very large (massive) on your wrist.
The Sub is on my wife’s wrist in the pics. Her wrist is about 14.5 cm. Mine is 16 cm, wearing the BLNR.

This is a great point. I love the ND Sub. It’s a beautiful watch, congrats and your wife’s new watch. Happy wife, happy life [emoji6]

Some will see your comment as harsh and tell him that it looks great, especially if they are wearing a watch that is too big relative to their wrist, but I agree. Also if I every put a 46mm Navitimer on my 7" wrist I hope someone will tell me it looks silly.

A DJ36, OP36, 36mm Explorer or sure a BB58...so many watches that would look amazing on a 6" wrist.

Appreciate the comments. Just to reiterate, the Sub is for my wife and the pics show her wearing it, not me. I agree it’s big on her. The OP36 and 36 mm Exp 1 are better fits for her but the opportunity to purchase a Sub was presented itself and she liked the Sub. Will probably add a 36 mm down the road though and I imagine that will be a better daily for her.

I was talking about your wrist. Oddly a watch that looks too huge on a woman is more acceptable to me (for some reason) because it is more for "fashion" not function many times. Kinda of like wearing a "boyfriends sweater/sweatshirt". This aspect does not exist in my opinion for men. Either it is proportionate and fits well or it does not.

Congrats OP. Glad you got a ND back in the stable. Truly a classic, and if there was one watch to epitomize Rolex, it is the ND Sub.

That said... I found your comp to the 114060 interesting. In my hands, the new 12 gen was significantly larger than the 11 series. Excellent watch, but prefer the smaller dimensions of the prior gen personally, given that I have a tiny wrist (if you don't have small wrists, its much of a muchness IMO). Can't go wrong either way.

Sounds like your wife knows what’s what. I think the concept that there are no “men’s” and “women’s” watches is a valid one. Women shouldn’t be limited to the watches the companies are marketing as a ladies watch. Same with men. I was pleasantly surprised when she preferred the professional models over your typical TT DJ with diamonds.

I might be in the minority here, I got the new Sub ND less than a month ago however, comparing it to the Hulk that I own I haven't felt the changes were that significant, I was not bothered with the fat lugs on the older model the same way I am not bothered by the wider bracelet and clasp on the newer model !

The Sub ND is an iconic and gorgeous watch and I like it a lot, it is so versatile and great to have in a collection or as an only watch.
