Longines purchase from Amazon- bad idea?

Hello all- my wife is looking to purchase a Longines Heritage Military for me from Amazon... it’s a Christmas present that I’m not supposed to know about. When I looked up the details of the watch, the vendor says that Longines won’t warranty the watch since it’s being sold for below the suggested price but they would extend their own warranty. The watch is $1500 which is considerably less than the $2150 listed price. Is it worth it to save $600 or is the warranty the better choice? Also- if she were to go to an AD, is there any chance they would take a little something off the price of the watch? Thank you in advance for any help with this.

Hello, Longines won't warranty the watch not because it's below the suggested price, but because the vendor is not an authorized dealer. So in this case, they are offering their "own" warranty, which means they'll fix it in-house or send it to a local watchmaker, which could have it's plusses and minuses. Essentially, it's like buying from a gray market seller.

Up to you whether it's worthwhile to have OEM warranty or not. And yes, you can get a discount off when buying from an AD, it just depends on the AD. It most likely will not be lower than the gray market though; you'll still be paying a premium. I can recommend an AD in the Chicago area.

I concur.

Savings would also more than cover the expense of fixing a problem with Longines if you go the non refund route. Plus, there usually is a two year warranty on top of it after servicing.

IMHO....stay away from 'EVERY HOUR'. I ordered two weeks ago. They printed the label right away, giving the impression it was on the way....this is the message I got this morning...."Label Created, not yet in system
A status update is not yet available on your Priority Mail® package. It will be available when the shipper provides an update or the package is delivered to USPS. Check back soon." 👎

Thank you- I'm going to pass on this seller. I found an AD with this watch in stock. Im going to try to get out there by Friday and get to see it in person.

Having never bought a nice watch from a jeweler, how would you guys approach negotiating the price/ getting a discount? How much do you think is a realistic amount to pay for this watch?

Longines fall into the category along with Tag and Oris, of good watches that fall like stones once you walk out of the dealer, so MRSP is definetly an offer to treat, and discount is the order of the day.

Amazon are an extremely reputable company and therefore I would have no issues in buying from them, but also I would try the dealer as he may well be prepared to price match to get your business.

If you don't have a relationship already with the AD, it may be harder. Some things to consider: Cash can talk if you let them know you're paying now. Conversely, taking a store credit card (but only if you can pay it off straight away, or they are offering no-interest for a period of time) can sometimes entice them. It depends on what motivates them.

I'd say let them know you're definitely interested in buying the watch, you'd love to buy it from them, but you have other options as well. Ask politely what they can do for you on price. 10% should be a given, and 20% might be available. I've had good luck on discounts on Longines, but it's from a Jared's that I frequent so they know me.

One thing to consider is the Heritage Military is a popular watch and so they may not be inclined to discount much.

I wouldn't give up on the Amazon deal just yet. Bottom line, you can always rely on Amazon to back you if you need to return it.

I've bought from Jomashop a few times and have no problems with them. However, I've never considered their warranty in my decision as I'm not sure I'd trust them with my new watch. They offer low prices by skimping on other things like after sales service. So if I needed service, I'd just pay for it myself using the saving off the price.

I do know others here have used the Joma warranty without problem, but it seems like most don't have a good experience with them for repairs.
