Hi Guys,

I have been thinking of getting my first rolex. As I am not so wealthy, this purchase is quite a big thing for me and I want to ensure that I can get the watch that I can use and enjoy for a very long time. I already decided that I am going to go for rolex steel sport model as it is very well known to be robust and I like how rolex maintain its value over time.

Now, your input is highly appreciated and it has been fun experience for me to read information in this forum, check reviews, etc. Among steel sport rolex, I am considering 4 models in rolex line up to get and they are Milgauss (Black GV), Datejust 41 (Blue or black, still undecided), no date sub ceramic 114060 and explorer 2016. My watch currently is the tag heuer twin time GMT.

Date is not important at all. I can get by without having it.

Now what I like and dislike about each model is :

Milgauss pro: The green saphire is unique and it is quite appealing. it also flies under the radar (nobody will know it is rolex).
milgauss con: It is quite an old model which may be replaced soon, slightly thick at 13mm, I am not sure if I can use it as everyday watch as it is pretty bizarre with that thunder second hand and GV crystal.

DJ 41 pro: I love the new movement (70 hrs power reserve) and the design is also very pretty
DJ 41 Con: weak resale value (compared to other steep sport rolex), cyclops and it screams rolex , and again i am not sure if i can wear it as an every day watch since it is a bit too dressy.

submariner pro: Very stable investment, very iconic
Submariner con: Personally i am not so crazy about the design and it is quite large on my wrist. it is also slightly more expensive than the others. And it is a very common model.

Explorer 1 pro : very simple and flies under the radar, it is the most versatile among all 4
Explorer 1 con: there is nothing unique about it and weak resale value.

Which model you recommend me to go for? I just cant decide. Thank you for your inputs in advance.

The DJ41 is excellent, and you can basically get it exactly in the style you want. It's a bit more dressy, but I'm assuming you have other sport watches for casual wear. The DJ41 CAN be dressed down if you wanted.

If not DJ41, I'd go Explorer. Gets you under the radar, sport and dress, and great lume.

Avoid SM Pro and Milgauss for your first. Common. I mean they are great, but get something you really want. Your con list is about right.

Do you think it looks alright to wear DJ 41 everyday? is it ok as a casual watch? If i am going to get that, i will opt for smooth bezel.

Not sure why you are concerned with resale value unless you plan on flipping it even before you've purchased it. Of those four, I would get the Explorer as the most versatile for all activities and dress. Mine has kept great time consistently from the date of purchase. The Easylink bracelet is very comfortable although I have mine on a zulu strap for summer.

To be frank with you, i get bored pretty easily. I got my tag 8 months ago and i totally outgrown it now. I just get tired with it. So resale value is pretty important so when i get tired with the watch i can flip it without losing too much money. But if i never get tired with it, man thats great! LOL. not sure it will happen though.

DO you think explorer is great with like rubber strap? i used to like explorer very much and still do. but the sub, DJ 41 and milgauss are all seriously nice as well and this is why i cant decide LOL. but its good to have lots of options

Had a DJ and it was a very nice watch I just felt it did not suit every attire that I wore like the Explorer and as for the Sub it is a beautiful if not one of the best looking dive watches but I burnt myself out wearing dive watches since I was 16 , it is an expensive hobby so try on as many as you are interested in and it really needs to be comfortable to wear or it will not get much wrist time no matter how well it looks in the box. If you have any reservations on a particular model it usually will not get better or go away so follow your heart.

Sure subs are "common," particularly among forum members, but I have to say that I rarely see them in the wild where I live or work. That may be different if you're in business or live/work in someplace like NYC or LA. It should be about what you like- but among your choices- have you tried on the no date sub? It's 40mm. Sure it has the super case wider lug design but I would doubt it's too big for your wrist. I like a watch like the sub for its substantial weight, great looks, and it's ability to be worn everywhere. And if this is your first Rolex, I suspect you'll get the bug to upgrade at some point down the line. If it isn't in the budget to have multiple watches- then with the sub you have the added bonus of having a watch that has good resale value. Just my opinion.

Given your opinion about the watches, the Explorer 1 (Basel 2016) fits your bill. I would have normally recommended the 114060 but you mentioned that it appears larger for your wrist. Don't worry about the larger power reserve or the new movement. Either way, Rolex guarantees you +/-2 secs per day. The movement is anyway black box to you. It is just for your own theoretical satisfaction.

Also, you are worried a lot about resale value. Watches irrespective of the brand/model will loose value. If that is very important, you should buy a Ceramic Daytona. It is kinda true that the Milgauss and DJ don't retain a lot of value because of the demand. Buying pre owned saves a lot of initial depreciation cost.

Also speaking about the Sub being common, Rolex makes a million watches per year. So yes, depending on your location, you can expect to see lot of Rolexes around you (specially Subs). More so because there are tons micro brands which make Sub homages. But again, you are buying for yourself and not for others.

It's sounds like you eliminated two yourself, Milgauss and Sub are out because you don't appear to really like them. For the DJ and the Exp, I would personally go Exp because I find it a better fit for personal and professional wear. I really like all 4 but wouldn't personally add any of them to my collection. But with the options you presented I'd get the explorer.

Consider the Air King, Same case and movement as the Milgauss, and over 1k cheaper. Its also been designed as a tribute to the Bloodhound World land speed record attempt! Its always worth having something 'special' and not an 'everyday' Rolex.

Explorer fits best from my POV

My first was the 214270 1.0, love it so much I got the Explorer II later that same year.

Did try on the Milgauss GV and the BLNR when I bought the Explorer, but it was a bit top heavy on wrist so I got the Explorer instead..didn't like the square lug shape of the BLNR neither.

Couldn't care less about "weak resale" value. No current Rolex keeps their value anyways if you flip it within a few years.

It depends on which one do you like the most, one that would make you smile everytime you put it on even after years.
Milgauss, I prefer the z blue dial, the way the shade changes with lighting is stunning
Sub, I have this already and love it to death
DJ, I've always liked the DJ and have been saving up for DJ41
Explorer is a very good looking watch but I find it a little bit boring

I would pick DJ41 and SubC

There is no bad option here.

How old are you, and what settings do you plan to primarily wear this Watch?

i am in my mid 30s and I will wear watch to office but I dont wear suit. My office environment is pretty casual. So i wear long pants with short sleeved shirt most of the time.
I also would like to wear this when i hang out with my friends though so this is why I dont like too dressy of a watch.

what do you suggest?

I have to respectfully disagree. The milgauss does not fly under the radar. Ive seen it out in the wild and it was very flashy. A friend who isn't into watches even noticed it and identified it as a rolex. It's a great watch (especially the z blue) but in my opinion it's not an everyday watch unless you want the attention.

The explorer 2 (especially the previous generation) is the most understated rolex out there imo. It's a watch you can wear daily and not be worried about the attention. The explorer 1 is not bad either.

The djii or dj41 are in between the milgauss and explorer. If u get the smooth bezel and luminous stick marker dials it's not too flashy and understated but clearly Rolex. If u go flutted bezel and/or jubilee bracelet you make it more flashy.
