Well, I've been keeping my eye on the Sinn 104 for a while now - I was either between adding a Sinn 104 or a Tudor Black Bay 58 Steel (that's the version with the steel bezel + date) as a dive/aviation watch. I wanted something with a rotating bezel (My collection up to this point had fixed or very minimalistic bezel dress watches). While the Tudor has the in-house movement with the added PR and upgraded hairspring, etc. I really like having the date and day display. Not to mention that I can think of many day-to-day uses of a countdown bezel versus a diver's count-up bezel. So, Sinn 104 it was for me out of the two.
Did some further research and pulled the trigger on this Sinn with the sunburst anthracite dial & fine link bracelet. Order placed, and come this morning I have the watch and all of its goodies:
Inner and outer boxes are nice - nothing super special here and utilitarian, fitting for a brand like Sinn. There's some real shiny goodness underneath that protective plastic wrapping!
Took some links off of the fine-mesh bracelet using the hex wrenches, and gave it a whirl on the wrist:
Some first thoughts:
The bracelet is truly wonderful companion to the watch with its looks and great articulation. Polished middle and outer links with a brushed finish on the intermediary two links really elevate the look of the watch in my opinion. I could get it sized to my ~7.25 in wrists with no hassle by removing a full and half link. The butterfly deployant clasp locks in very solidly and hugs the wrist without any problem. An additional on-the-fly microadjustment system would be great, but for my wrist size I'm very pleased. Hex system for securing link pins tightens down real nicely and feels very secure.
The crown has good action and is easily manipulatable. The short crown guards are a nice touch that don't impede operation. No problems setting, etc. Typical 2834/SW-220 winding feel.
The dial is the electroplated sunburst anthracite type, which appears as dark grey. See the other pictures below to see how dynamic the anthracite dial is under other lighting conditions
The bezel has great action, and rotates in 1 minute increments to align with the minute hand. Let's say you wanted to count down from 30 minutes: simply rotate the bezel so the minute hand is pointing at 30, then when the hand reaches 0 minutes, time's up. Handy and simple.
The case is 41mm in diameter (w/o crown) and is highly polished all around - not a problem in my book and gives the aviation watch a dressier look to its otherwise toolish design. I really like how the 20mm wide lugs slope downwards - hugs the wrist very nicely and complements the ~11mm thickness of the watch - makes it seem much less slab-like:
The lume is nicely done. The application of the C3 SuperLuminova is thick, and is extremely legible in dark conditions. I suspect there will be no problem on it lasting throughout the night. First picture is freshly charged, second picture is after 20 minutes. Forgive the slight color change (the watch lume remains a steady green)
Lastly, here are some more pictures of the watch in various lighting conditions, hope you enjoy the pictures and enjoyed reading about the watch!
I'll add another post when I have more time to see how the top grade Selitta performs, alongside with how the C3 lume holds up overnight.
