Is it just me or is the Oris just too similar to the Seiko?

It’s green and the hands are similar, but beyond that they look alike in the way that just about all watches do. I mean....the cases are both round, they both have some numbers, text and their logos on their dials, brown leather straps, crowns and a chapter ring...so yeah, they’re similar. But again, there are probably hundreds of models that share those similarities. There’s only so much you can do with a “style” before it becomes something altogether different. By the time you make all those differentiating changes, it ends up looking like a diver, or a dress watch or a chronograph....and the similarity comparison starts all over. Anyway, that’s just my thought on it. At the end of the day, I can’t say I love either one.

New Oris "Alpinist"

Oris has had a version of this Big Crown Pointer in their lineup for ages. The only thing new is the green dial. I'd venture to say Oris had this overall design before Seiko. Here's the black dial version that's been in their collection for years.

I have this two tone version.

Re: New Oris "Alpinist"

Congratulations. I enjoy both those Oris Pointer Date watches. I understand the ppointer date has been an Oris feature going way back.

Here's one I bet you never thought you'd hear me say. The Oris is lovely but I'd sooner have the Seiko.
I think the global watch-community just kinda shut down for a moment of stunned silence. Lol...you feeling ok today, Sticky? Maybe it was something you ate. Go lie down for a bit, then come back to the thread in a few hours and let's try this again.

I find the opposite to be true. I'm not so sure about the green dial, but the other Big Crown Pointers I've seen are beautiful in person. I haven't seen the Seiko in person but it doesn't do anything for me. That's what's so great about this hobby; we all have different taste and perspectives.

Fugly?

BOTH watches are fugly and lets's face it *nobody* looks good in green. If I wanted pretty, I'd be looking at Nomos or Baume Cliftons.

If I were to consider either watch (I'm not!) it would be for their character, not beauty.

In fact the more I think of it, the more it strikes me that the Alpinist is the ugly sister of the Clifton.:)

The Alpinist is a nice watch however I ended up selling it. I do like the look of it however it just didn't quite do "it" for me in the long run. I've always liked those date pointer Oris and like this green one very much as well. Very different then the Alpinist imo. Actually like it much more however it has a very large price difference as well.

I see a similarity in the hour and minute hands but that's about it. The second hand, crown(s)/crown guard, bezel, date/compass, strap, numbering, texture, indices, Swiss Made/Japan, and green dial are much different.

Here's what Oris says:

"Oris pays tribute to both its iconic Big Crown and the Dewoitine D.26 aircraft with the Big Crown D.26 286 HB-RAG Oris Limited Edition. The D.26 was a training aircraft used by the Swiss Air Force between 1931 and 1948. The D.26 286 HB-RAG is conserved and flown by Hangar 31 and is one of only two planes still flying. Sales of the watch, which is limited to 1,931 pieces, will support Hangar 31's work."
