I'd guess it's because of the chronograph... there aren't many inexpensive automatic chronos out there, so they'd be reliant on quartz. Which doesn't necessarily appeal to most watch nerds.

Also, it's not as much of a status symbol as say a Submariner, so you don't have the non-WIS wanting a "homage" to appear wealthy to other non-WIS.

There really aren't many cheap chronograph movements out there, so this limit the possibility of speedy lookalikes

If you are open to quartz, I think the Bulova moonwatch is the closest to an affordable speedy lookalike

 

It is an odd one. I think the challenge is that it is such an iconic look it is hard to do it justice without really just copying. I tried a few that were close but none scratched the itch and ended up getting a real one from the 70s. Bit cheaper than modern and they haven't changed!

 

Fossil's got a few. One of my old coworkers had one and I did a double-take the first time I saw it.

They even have a DSOTM version. ;P

 

Casie Ediface for the ones with sub dials as 12,9, and 3, and bulova moonwatch for the traditional speedmaster look. doesnt get much closer looking to that. It even comes with the velcro NATO

 

The Bulova moon watch is the closest thing I've seen that looks like it but that itself doesn't even really look that much like it other than a vaguely similar style, colour and sub dial layout. Everything else has the subdials sideways so don't look much like it either. I've never seen a fake Speedmaster as well, I think it's too complicated to fake properly and the demand isn't there as it's not seen as enough of a luxury watch like someone else said, just an under the radar tool watch in most cases.

 

Not a Speedmaster homage but these Seiko Chronos are something I like for their dial layout and some even come with a Speedmaster clasp b-)

I owned this Merona Chronograph for approximately 20 years, just sold it recently. IMHO, it improved on the original in several ways....case was symmetrical, instead of being thicker on the side where the pushers were located. Pushers were lower profile to allow this. Bezel integrated better into the case. Flat mineral crystal flush with bezel, so less likely to get scratched. Overall, a really nice watch.

 

Alpha makes a few. Casio has some good ones and Yankee's got those covered in his post.

Bulova's own moon watch, the original version of which has actually been to the moon and has a pretty deep history with NASA, is Speedy-like.
