Seamaster or Speedmaster?

Omega Seamaster or Omega Speedmaster

My fellow Omega enthusiasts,

I am stuck between maintaining my Omega "Seaweed" or swapping it out for an Omega Speedmaster. For those of you that own or have owned both what are your thoughts? Other watches in my collection include a Rolex Sub Date, Seiko Arabic Dial, and some other micro brand watches. I say this to provide some context to my collection. Just wanted to reach out my fellow watch friends and see advice you all had. How is the Speedy movement compared to Seamaster?

Thanks.

Cheers

I've heard on more than one occasion that "every real collection includes a Speedmaster". I don't know that it's an axiom or anything, but I've never heard it about a Seamaster.

That said, I have two Seamasters and no Speedy, so...

Owned the Seamaster for just over 12 months. Really nice watch but in the end I wasn’t wearing it and found it a bit ‘meh’. I’d have a Speedy in a heartbeat. Sacrilege to say but I’ve bought a MoonSwatch to scratch the itch until I can get the real thing.
Similar story here. I only kept mine for two years and it didn’t get worn much the last year.

My two cents…the Seamaster is a really nice watch from a quality standpoint (I get why they’re popular), but at the end of the day…it doesn’t do anything for me in the aesthetics department.

A Speedmaster day-date has been on my want to buy list for years. Theres just a timeless aesthetic about the entire Speedmaster line. Similar to that of the Submariner.

You can’t go wrong with either. Do you want to live with and wear a chronograph?

I’ve had both! I have the seaweed still, sold the sapphire 3861. Also sold the blue seamaster.
I couldn’t bond with the blue seamaster. But that green, those that own it and have experienced it in the sunlight knows what I’m talking about, that green is absolutely beautiful. The lack of red on the dial contributes. I never really realized how much the red ascents takes away from the Seamaster and makes it more like a timex or Seiko. Just my opinion.
I got bored with the speedmaster after a year and after the “historical hype” wore off. Plus, everyone wears one. Lol. I’ve seen several on the street. But my green Seamaster is the only one I’ve seen and I like being different.
My collection now consist of the green Seamaster, denim railmaster, black 39.5 PO, and the 40mm Rolex Explorer. The green seasmaaster is still my favorite.

I started buying Omega watches 8years ago since Omega is my lovely brand.

The first 3 years I bought 2 Seamaster models (PO & Professional Seamaster with 2500cal) and i was very happy with my choices, but after 1-2 years by studying and reading more of horology and models, i went with a 1861 Speedy Professional and i realised that Speedy models were more suitable for me. I love the same classic design of the Speedy Professional.
The daily winding of the Speedies is something that takes the daily stress away for me.

If i had the chance to go back in time, for sure i would own as more Speedies as i could afford.

I was in a somewhat similar situation a few months ago. I was trying to choose between the Seaweed and the Speedy, but I did not own either already. If I were you, I would keep the Seaweed and be happy.
I did choose the Speedmaster for my collection though. I went with the hesalite and it is freaking awesome. It does scratch easily but I like it. In a way the properties of hesalite are the point. Ya know? Like, it does scratch easily, yes, but it also doesn't shatter, which is why it was "flight-qualified by NASA in 1965 for all manned space missions." The hesalite makes it the space watch. The sapphire is just an awesome chronograph.

This is the no win scenario type of question. They are both superb watches and look great on the wrist. The speedmaster can go on a variety of straps giving it a different style, The current Diver300M is one of the nicest versions of the watch in my opinion that Omega has been produced. I own both but wear them very infrequently. They are fine watches but others are more interesting to me. I don't really care for chronographs other than the Speedmaster so I just don't gravitate to Chronos. The Diver 300m is a great watch but I have other divers that I like for some reason or another more than the Omega so the Diver 300m sits. Choosing just one I will take the Diver300M. Modern looking watch, amazing movement, water resistance, and more color options.

Had both, and for me the Seamaster was a better watch, for me.

Completely different beasties, so a very personal decision.

I have both and have had both for years. The Seamaster gets much more wear than the Speedie. For me, the Speedie seems fragile compared to the SM. The lack of on-the-fly adjustability of the bracelet is also a small factor.

If a chrono is your thing for a daily, go Speedie, but I'm interested in readability and durability, for me, that's the SM.
