P.5000 vs the older ETA/Valjoux Movements

This is my first post and I apologize if this topic has come up before. If it has, please direct me to the proper thread.

I'm having some trouble getting a solid opinion on the P.5000 in-house movement and how it compares to the older ETA models (reliability, robustness, and maintenance). I currently own a PAM356 and am looking to buy another model (w/8 day reserve) and I'm not sure how the P.5000 8-day holds up. What are your thoughts on the in-house vs. ETA's?

Does your budget allows for P200x movts? I'm asking this as I have 2 P2002 with different iterations (339 and 368) and both are giving me around +1 to +3 a day and around 247 hrs of PR

I think current P5000 should be okay as it's been several years since its first production, however I don't have one so I couldn't comment on its accuracy and PR

Unitas movt has lower PR (56-60 hrs) but it's easier to regulate, you can do it by simply adjusting the resting position...and the winding feeling actually matches the image of Panerai

I appreciate your input. Most "reviews" I've seen are from retailers or people that unboxed the watch, and I haven't seen much from long-term owners. Therefore, I don't know if Panerai is doing its in-house movements justice or being cheap (cough, cough, Due). Fortunately, my budget does allow it... I'll look at that calibre. Thank you.

I would also be very intersted to see the opinions of actual owners. On one hand I would much prefer to buy a Panerai with an in-house movement. On the other hand, I would like the movement to actually keep accurate time over multiple years. There was a similar concern when Oris came out with its 10 days in-house movement a couple of years back, but the reviews thus far have been pretty good.

I was one who had a P.5000 based watch (PAM610) that had unacceptable timekeeping. It ran ridiculously fast when it was fully wound, and after the first day (or more than likely after the first 15 minutes of being fully wound) it ran better, but still was fast and had much variation from day to day.

After about six months I had it sent back to Panerai under warranty. It received a full service and after almost a week it's now running very well, perhaps a second fast/day. I'll keep track of it for a few weeks before I'll be satisfied that it's running well, but from what I can see so far it looks like an excellent timekeeper.

i had a 510 with P5000 before and experienced no issue with the movement. it winds smoothly and keeping good time.

now i don't own any PAM with P5000 any more (my 2 are both ETA), but i blame Panerai for not putting the P5000 into a 000 :)

(actually they kinda did with the 560 painted dial, haha)

I have 2 p5000 pams and had 2 that I sold. Solid movt. No issue whatsoever.

I had a 590 and it had the same issue where it would keep great time on the last 7 days, but the first day after a full wind was an abomination. It would gain 20 - 30 seconds on day 1 after a full wind, and I could actually see it gain a second per minute for the first 5 or so minutes. Once it settled down after the first day it kept pretty good time. I ended up selling it for something else.

I have heard a small but steady number of similar reports in the year-and-a-half or more since I bought mine; not all watches with P. 5000 movements suffer from the problem, but enough do that it's a real risk.

You're welcome. I was having a difficult time finding info from actual owners. Most information was coming from dealers, salespeople, or media that had something to gain by saying "it was a good movement". But NO ONE would tell me how it compared.

I have purchased a 510 about a month ago, new. The movement *did* run faster for the first 15 to 20 minutes, then settled down to keeping excellent time (~1.5 fast per day). When it *DID* run fast after full wind, it had run fast to 15-20 seconds fast within 15 to 20 minutes. Then it slowed down to within 1.5 seconds fast per DAY. NOW, after yesterday's full wind, it no longer ran 15-20 seconds fast, it ran 5 seconds fast. So, it looks to be settling (or have already "broken in" after the 1.5 month break in period). I predict after full break-in, it will no longer run fast after full wind (which is wound once per week, or every Saturday morning). As far as I'm concerned, the P.5000 is a fantastic movement, looks solidly built, especially only having 127 pieces to the movement and a [big movement in magnitude] is in accord with strength in design, not small and with many tiny parts rendering it a delicate movement as so.

It is a good movement. And it's nice to have a first full manufacture in-house movement. Though the ETA/Valjoux is a solid movement, this one is Panerai's first, and that is what it is really cool that I like. Panerai for life!!

Kind regards,
Louis
