Patek Golden Ellipse

Been reading and learning about the golden Ellipse. The shape and the subtle design really speaks to me. The blue dial made of gold (at least in photos) is unreal in the light and very interesting how they turn the dial that color. Anyone have any personal experience with owning one? I really like the ones that have lugs, I know it’s not the original design but very similar to the Universal Geneve Shadow watches that were also designed by Genta. Reference 3546 and 3666 are my two favorite. I think that is the watch I will buy next if I can find a nice clean example at a good price. Any input on value, wearability, etc would be appreciated. Thanks

Been watching TGV YouTube videos eh?

Here’s mine. Can’t remember the ref off the top of my head but it’s one of the modern iterations. 36mm, grey dial, WG case, auto winding, etc. it’s an ultra slim watch so it wears very well. Typical patek attention to detail. Not a daily wearer for me.

Timeless design that’s been a staple in the Patek catalogue for decades.

One of my favorite watches but relatively unloved in social media. Seems like every five or so years YouTubers and bloggers seem to rediscover it for a week when someone famous is photographed with one.

I'll add a little more to my slightly flippant statement.

If you are specifically looking for an ellipse I suggest searching out a modern variation which is true to the original ellipse design, and not a watch that's an ellipse merged with something else.

The ellipse design is a great case-study in how to reduce a watch to its essential elements while maintaining a compelling design. There are a lot of very subtle ways the dial and case reflect light that does not come off very well in pictures. If you appreciate the precise application of proportion, shape, execution, etc. the ellipse is a great watch to look for.

One more picture for the road.

I ended up picking up a variation of the ellipse and not the original shape. This one is more square than rectangular. I like the way it looks and the dimensions and design are perfect for me. I was mainly interested in the watch due to its design and blue dial. I think I will be happy with it. I will post it once it arrives from Europe.

The more I look at ellipses the more I like them. It's a classic reference, with old world charm, that has stood guard against time. I'm noticing increasing attention on them within PP circles/forums. If I came across the right example at the right price, I would consider buying one if I didn't have a 5196 already. Definitely a solid, timeless, contender for a 3-hand dress-only piece, although I think it can be dressed more casually as well (like many of PP's dress watches).

I’ve got a 5738P. It’s a wonderful watch that will alway be a staple in my collection. Minimalist, beautiful. It weirdly is able to be dressed down and up, which is unexpected. It’s a timeless design and the modern sizes are bigger than you think, if you’ve not worn them. And when that strap breaks in? It feels great.
