I’ve got some Polywatch on the way, anybody have tips on how best to use it on a Hesalite crystal?

I variously use either a q-tip
I do not recommend the use of q-tips or any other cotton swab (or ball). Cotton is abrasive. It is used in furniture refinishing. If your goal is to polish something to a clear shine, stick with cotton cloth or microfiber. Raw cotton will never get you a polished finish because it will leave micro-scratches.

I use a soft, thick cotton cloth and I mask off the bezel with masking tape. A dab of Polywatch on the crystal and polish - don't be afraid to apply some pressure. I polish in circles and turn the watch often so I don't over-polish one spot or side. Once you've polished for a bit the Polywatch will disappear into your polishing cloth. Find a new clean spot on your cloth, add some more Polywatch to the crystal and go at it again (and again) until you have a clear crystal. Finish off with a clean part of your cotton cloth to wipe away any remaining traces of Polywatch.

That's hard to believe, given that it is used to clean plastic eyeglass lenses ... and is provided by Omega and Rolex to keep one's watch clean and shiny. My guess it that whatever you used with the microfiber cloth was the culprit, or the cloth had been impregnated with scratchy material (they need to be washed periodically).
